Germany train without Can as Lehmann says Spain are 'too small'
Germany started their preparations for the European Championship quarter-final against Spain without midfielder Emre Can on Tuesday. The 30-year-old was the only member of the 26-man squad missing from the training pitch in Herzogenaurach, with Germany citing stress management as the reason. It was Germany's first training session since the 2-0 last-16 win over Denmark on Saturday. Players had been given two days to unwind. Can seems likely to be fit for Friday's clash in Stuttgart. Centre back Jonathan Tah is also pushing to start after his suspension against Denmark let in the impressive Nico Schlotterbeck. Left back David Raum fought his way into the team against the Danes but Maximilian Mittelstädt, who started in the group stage, is training hard. Playmaker Florian Wirtz, dropped in favour of Leroy Sané in the last 16, is in a similar situation. Spain are the only side at the Euros in Germany to win all their games so far and look slight favourites over the hosts and fellow three-times winners. But former Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann is tipping Julian Nagelsmann's side. "In terms of quality, they are perhaps a little better than us. But they are too small in height and they are very inexperienced," the 54-year-old told Welt TV.
Portugal coach recommends Palhinha to Bayern
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has urged Bayern Munich to launch a renewed bid to sign midfielder João Palhinha. Bayern almost signed the Fulham player last August but the deal fell apart at the last minute, frustrating then coach Thomas Tuchel's wish for another holding number 6. Tuchel has left Bayern and it remains to be seen if head of sport Max Eberl and new coach Vincent Kompany will come back in for Palhinha, after the trail went cold in January. "I'm absolutely delighted with his performance, he had a big influence on our game," Martinez told reporters after a 0-0 draw and penalty shoot-out victory over Slovenia in the Euro last 16 on Monday. "He's not just good enough for Bayern, he would even strengthen Bayern. He makes players around him better. He deserves everything that comes his way. He's even better as a person." Portugal next play in France in the European Championship quarter-final in Hamburg on Friday, when Palhinha is again set to start as he bids to shine again for a prospective new employer. The 28-year-old recently said: "Both clubs know where I want to be in a month's time."
Lebanese defy threats of war, sound of rockets to party on the beach
Against the background of the noise of exploding rockets and constant Israeli drone strikes, the people of southern Lebanon living in the port city of Tyre have decided to defy the hostilities to soak up the sun's rays and party. Anyone who doesn't follow the news would not believe that just a few kilometres away towns have been destroyed in the daily rocket fire and people are getting killed. "Coming here is an act of survival in a country where nothing is working," Batoul Ezzedine told dpa while she was sunbathing on the beach in Tyre. A war has been brewing in the...
Mbappé set to wear mask for the rest of the Euros, says Deschamps
France striker Kylian Mbappé, who like his team mates is yet to score from open play at Euro 2024, will almost certainly have to wear the mask protecting his broken nose for the rest of the tournament. That is the verdict of coach Didier Deschamps, even if the 1984 and 2000 champions go all the way to the final in Berlin on July 14. "He has to get used to it because he must wear the mask for the next couple of weeks," Deschamps told reporters after the 1-0 win over Belgium in the last 16. "It is not easy playing with a...
Mauritania cuts mobile internet services amid post-election protests
The Mauritanian authorities cut access to mobile internet services early Tuesday after protests took place the previous evening in several cities against presidential election results. Protesters took to the streets on Monday evening in the capital Nouakchott, as well as the coastal city of Nouadhibou, Zouérat in the north and Rosso in the south-west. President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani was re-elected after winning 56.12% of votes cast during Saturday's elections. His main rival, Biram Dah Abeid, an anti-slavery human rights activist, came in second place after winning 22% of the vote. Abeid rejected the results and alleged there was fraud, and urged his supporters to protest against the results. After the results were officially announced on Monday, Ould Ghazouani, 67, said that his victory reflects the success of the democratic process in the north-west African nation and vowed to continue consultation and dialogue with all political parties. Ould Ghazouani, a former defence minister, was elected in 2019 in the country's first peaceful transition of power. His predecessor Mohamed Ould Abdel-Aziz took office after a 2008 military coup. Earlier this year, the European Union promised Mauritania, a former French colony, financial support worth €210 million ($229 million), to be used to tackle migration and provide humanitarian aid for migrants.
Germany's Scholz and ministers in Poland for government consultations
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been welcomed with military honours to Warsaw by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, marking the start of the first German-Polish government consultations since 2018. Scholz travelled to Poland with 12 federal and state ministers. According to government sources in Berlin, the consultations should provide "a strong impetus" for good neighbourly relations. A joint German-Polish action plan including several projects is expected to be agreed. Berlin is expected to present a financial package for Poland. It is expected to include compensation payments for living Polish victims of the occupation by Nazi Germany as well as German aid for the defence of NATO's eastern flank. In addition, money is to be channelled into the construction of the German-Polish House in Berlin. The house is intended to commemorate the complicated German-Polish history and the brutal German occupation during World War II (1939-45) and create a place of remembrance for the Polish victims of the war.

Passenger traffic rose by 11% for Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair Holdings PLC in June compared to the same month in the previous year. For the rolling period, the airline carried 188.8 million guests, an increase of 9% from the prior year. Load factor was 94%, flat with last year.
France wary as tearful Ronaldo says this is his last Euros
Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed this will be his last European Championship after Portugal reached a quarter-final with France following his own personal Slovenian saga. The only man to play in six Euros, and the tournament's record ever scorer with 14 goals, is still to net this time outside of a penalty shoot-out. A winner against the goal-shy French, whose players have yet to score a single goal from open play, could be written in the stars in Hamburg on Friday. "It's undoubtedly my last European Championship," he told Portuguese reporters after Monday's game, given he will be 43 at the next Euros. "But it's...

If you're buying a used car, the mileage doesn't tell the whole story
Many might hesitate before buying a used car that has already got 100,000 kilometres or far more on the odometer. But think twice, as a higher mileage is not necessarily bad news, says a German car association. Rather, look twice if you are considering an older car that seems to have been driven remarkably little, so that you don't fall for any trickery involving the dials. What really counts are the car's general condition and how the vehicle has been used beforehand, says Germany's ADAC club. Take a long-distance car that is started once in the morning and then runs for five hours...
US Supreme Court rules presidents have immunity for official acts
In a significant partial win for former US president Donald Trump, the US Supreme Court ruled on Monday that presidents have presumed immunity from prosecution for official acts while in office. The judges returned the case, an appeal of an earlier ruling, to the lower court and instructed that court to determine how the decision should be applied to Trump's case. This is likely to further delay the start of a possible trial against Trump for attempted election fraud in the US capital Washington in connection with the January 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol by Trump's supporters. It is considered unlikely...
Netanyahu says end-phase of war on Hamas is close
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said he believed that the main phase of the war against the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip would soon be concluded. "We are moving towards the end of the phase of dismantling Hamas' terror army," he said in Jerusalem at a reception for cadets of the National Defence Academy. "We will continue to fight their remnants." Netanyahu had earlier visited the Gaza Division, which is currently deployed in the city of Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip. He had seen "very considerable progress" there, he said. Israel has been bombarding Gaza for months...
Costa the hero after Ronaldo miss as Portugal into Euros quarters
Diogo Costa saved all three penalties as Portugal beat Slovenia 3-0 in a last 16 shoot-out at Euro 2024 after superstar Cristiano had missed from the spot in extra time on Monday. Ronaldo was in tears after having a 105th-minute penalty saved by Jan Oblak, who as Atletico Madrid player knows Ronaldo well from his days at Atletico Madrid. It was the culmination of frustration for the superstar who also failed to convert on three free-kicks as the score remained 0-0 after 120 minutes. But he then stepped up again to convert in the deciding shoot-out along with Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, while Costa saved the three from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbic. Costa had also thwarted a golden opportunity from Benjamin Sesko as Portugal had a lucky escape into the quarter-finals where they face France who edged Belgium 1-0 earlier in the day. Portugal beat France in the 2016 final. Slovenia leave the tournament with four draws in open play after offering stiff resistance in their first ever knock-out match.

Brazil's Pantanal wetlands seeing record number of forest fires
The Pantanal, one of the largest inland wetlands in the world, is experiencing the highest number of forest fires in the first half of the year since records began. There were 3,538 fire outbreaks in the first six months of this year - in 2020, which is considered the year with the worst fire season in the biome, there were 2,534 outbreaks in the same period, according to the Brazilian space institute Inpe. This is a record figure since records began in 1999. In June alone there were 2,639 fires, while the average for this period is 154. The wetland, which extends from...
Belgium's Tedesco to analyse Euros exit, De Bruyne leaves future open
Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco said he will analyse his team's frustrating Euro 2024 campaign "in a few weeks" after their last 16 exit, while captain Kevin de Bruyne left his future in the team open. "An hour after the final whistle and conceding a late own goal, it's hard to go into an analysis. We will analyse everything at this Euro in a few weeks," he told a news conference on Monday. Belgium were eliminated from the tournament after defender Jan Vertonghen scored a late own goal to hand France a 1-0 win and a spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. "It's difficult...
French centrists and leftists look to avert looming far-right victory
While the far-right nationalists emerged on top in the first round of France's early parliamentary elections, centrists surrounding Emmanuel Macron and the leftist camp started on Monday to look for ways to stop a feared right-wing government from coming into power after the second round of voting this coming Sunday. Based on provisional results from the Interior Ministry on Monday, the far-right nationalists are clearly leading the first round. Marine Le Pen's party, National Rally (RN), and its allies gained 33.15% of the votes. The left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) alliance stands at 27.99%, while President Emmanuel Macron's centrist Ensemble (Together) alliance...
Belgian own goal lifts France into Euro 2024 quarter-finals
Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen scored a late own goal to hand France a 1-0 win on Monday and a spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. Substitute Randal Kolo Muani had the ball in the area and shot towards goal in the 85th minute. It went into the net, but only after it deflected from Vertonghen's leg over goalkeeper Koen Casteels into the far corner. Both sides failed to present a good performance at the tournament so far, but France had the final word in the last 16 clash, and again helped by an own goal - as they were in their only...
You found a young, chirping bird: What do you do?
Chirping and vulnerable-looking birds can look like they're calling out for your help, but we humans can quickly do more harm than good in these situations. Young birds tend not to be as helpless or orphaned as they may seem, which is why German's Nature And Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) advises you to stop and intervene only when it makes sense. Particularly noisy are fledglings that have opened their eyes and have feathers, but have not yet learned to fly. Their parents still feed them insects and use calls to communicate with them. So how can you tell if these little birds need...
