Italy's Fiat beaten by Swiss Ferrari, but Spalletti doesn't like joke
Italy coach Luciano Spalletti reacted irritably to a journalist's question following the holders' exit from the European Championship against Switzerland. The Swiss dominated the Azzurri to win 2-0 on Saturday in Berlin and advance to the quarter-finals. A Swiss reporter asked Spalletti whether Italy had been a Fiat Panda and Switzerland a Ferrari. "You have to accept everything, even insinuations of bad taste like yours," the 65-year-old said. "It's clear that you are a person of great irony." The coach and his press officer then explicitly asked the journalist several times for his name and employer. "You were better than us and deserved to win," added Spalletti. "We will try to do better next time."
Voting begins in first round of French parliamentary elections
Polling booths opened on Sunday morning for the first round of elections to France's National Assembly, with President Emmanuel Macron seeking to increase the relative majority currently held in the lower house by his centrist movement. Some 49.3 million people are eligible to vote. Voting in a number of overseas territories has already started. Macron called early elections after the far-right National Rally (RN) made large gains in elections to the European Parliament at the beginning of this month. However, Macron's presidency is not at stake in the snap election - his second and final term in office ends in 2027. The RN's Marine Le Pen is seen as a serious contender in the next presidential elections. The RN is leading in pre-election polling ahead of the new leftist alliance, the New Popular Front (NPF), recently established to contest the elections. The Ensemble (Together) alliance, led by Macron's Renaissance party, is trailing in third place.
How do the French parliamentary elections work?
The French will go to the polls on Sunday to elect new parliamentary representatives following the surprise dissolution of the National Assembly by President Emmanuel Macron three weeks ago. Macron's shock decision to take the risky gamble followed the resounding defeat of his centrist government by the far right at the elections to the European Parliament. Macron's position is not at stake in the two-round election, but the make-up of parliament will have a big impact on the remainder of his term in office, which runs until 2027. Here's how the voting works in one of Europe's most influential countries. What role does the...

German far-right AfD keeps current leaders at forum marked by protest
Members of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) confirmed the current leadership at a party congress held as huge crowds of protesters clashed with a massive contingent of police, leaving dozens of officers injured. The AfD is coming off a second-place finish in the European Parliament elections earlier this month, and is gearing up for state parliamentary elections in three eastern German states where the anti-immigrant and eurosceptic party appears to have an edge in the polls. "We are number one in the east," AfD co-chairman Tino Chrupalla declared to delegates gathering for the two-day event on Saturday in the western city...
Germany bide their time to beat Denmark and reach Euro quarters
Hosts Germany needed a second-half Kai Havertz penalty and a Jamal Musiala goal to get past Denmark 2-0 in a storm-and-VAR-dominated Euro 2024 last-16 clash on Saturday. It was a first knock-out win in eight years for Germany, who on Friday now face the winners of Sunday's game between three-times champions Spain and tournament debutants Georgia. "I believe we played a super game," Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck told ZDF. "I'm so happy for the team, it's a reward for our hard work. We're playing with euphoria and with fun." The game was suspended for 30 minutes in the first half due to a...

It was a first knock-out win in eight years for Germany, who on Friday now face the winners of Sunday's game between three-times champions Spain and tournament debutants Georgia. The game was suspended for 30 minutes in the first half due to a huge thunderstorm after Germany had the lion's share of the early chances. But in the second half, Joachim Andersen thought he had given Denmark the lead, only for VAR to spot a tight...
Spalletti: Italy failed to play with high intensity at Euro 2024
Italy coach Luciano Spalletti said the main issue with his team was the lack of intensity during games after the defending champions were knocked out of Euro 2024 with a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the last 16. "Recently we have tried to train players to have that intensity, the very quick recovery. In terms of that I wasn't overly happy with our responses on the training ground," he said after Saturday's game. "When we were forced to play at high tempo, we were not able to combine that with our players' attributes. If we failed, we failed. "We were not brave, we...
Thousands in Málaga protest against mass tourism
Thousands of people in the Spanish city of Málaga turned out to protest against mass tourism on Saturday, angered at high rents and housing shortages. They marched in the centre of the southern city, many carrying signs saying, "Málaga is not for sale" and "This is not tourism, this is an invasion." Some 25,000 people took part in the rally, the organizers said, though El País newspaper reported 15,000 attended. The city is the latest in Spain to see such protests after similar demonstrations against the excesses of tourism were held in other places popular among holidaymakers including Mallorca, Barcelona and the Canary...
Switzerland refuse secret favourites tag: 'We take it step by step'
Switzerland have refused to wear the crown of secret favourites at Euro 2024 after they ousted holders Italy with a 2-0 win in the last 16 on Saturday. "A lot can happen, one game can be decisive. Of course, we're strong, but we have to keep our feet on the ground," coach Murat Yakin said when asked if Switzerland were now the dark horses to win the tournament, a moniker so far bestowed on Austria by pundits. "We take it step by step, no matter who we play. We focus on ourselves, we don't want to be distracted by our opponents," he...
Holders Italy knocked out of Euro 2024 by dominant Swiss in last 16
Defending champions Italy were knocked out of Euro 2024 after being completely toothless in a 2-0 defeat against Switzerland in Saturday's last 16 in Berlin. The Azzurri were unbeaten against Switzerland in over 31 years, but were far from maintaining their record at the Olympic stadium in Berlin. "I have the responsibility for what happened, the responsibility is mine. I'm not happy with the game we played today," coach Luciano Spalletti told a news conference. "We made it through a tough group (with Spain, Croatia and Albania), but we didn't see a defined team in terms of fundamentals. And that's what we learned...
Germany v Denmark Euro 2024 last-16 game suspended due to bad weather
Germany and Denmark players had to return to their dressing rooms after thunder, lightning and heavy rain hit the first half of their Euro 2024 last 16 game. The score was at 0-0. Even hail began to fall. Bad weather had been forecast but organizers hope to restart the game later. However, the Dortmund turf took a hammering from a very heavy downpour.

The Azzurri were unbeaten against Switzerland in over 31 years, but were far from maintaining their record at the Olympic stadium in Berlin. The Swiss team broke the deadlock through Remo Freuler in the 37th minute, before they doubled their lead in the first minute of the second half in style thanks to Man of the Match Ruben Vargas. This is only the second time in European Championship history that Switzerland have reached the quarter-finals, equalling their best...
Spain coach says 16-year-old Yamal 'has only just started'
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente waxed lyrical about 16-year-old talent Lamine Yamal ahead of the Euro 2024 last-16 clash against Georgia on Sunday. Barcelona's Yamal has featured in all three of the Iberians' matches at this European Championship so far. The winger started twice in the group stage and impressed. In their last match against Albania (a 1-0 win), when Spain had already been confirmed as group winners, Yamal was rested but came on later. He is expected to be back in the starting X1 against major tournament debutants Georgia in Cologne. "He's showing a lot of maturity on the pitch," De...

Seven die in Russian missile attack on Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya region
At least seven people died in a Russian missile attack on the city of Vilniansk in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya region and a further 11 were seriously injured, including three children, the authorities reported. President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on X: "Unfortunately, the number of victims could rise." Zaporizhzhya Governor Ivan Fodorev said that an "object of the critical infrastructure" and several residential blocks had been damaged. He did not elaborate. The industrial city of Dnipro was hit on Friday, with one person killed and three others injured. Ukrainian cities and towns were being attacked daily, Zelensky said. "We will destroy the terrorists where they are, eliminate Russian launch ramps, hit them with long-range weapons and increase the number of modern anti-aircraft system in Ukraine," he added.
Germany bring in Raum and Sané to face Danes in last 16

Centre back Antonio Rüdiger was fit to start on Saturday in Dortmund, with Nico Schlotterbeck coming in for the suspended Jonathan Tah alongside him. Nagelsmann stuck with Kai Havertz up front, with Niclas Füllkrug again on the bench.
