Germany's Scholz found book written by Trump's VP pick 'touching'
The man Donald Trump has chosen to be his running mate in November's presidential election is the author of a book that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz found "touching." In his 2016 autobiographical book "Hillbilly Elegy," JD Vance described the crisis of the white working class in the US as industries shuttered. It became a bestseller there - and Scholz was also a fan. But Scholz has long since taken a more critical view of the author, who once criticized Trump as "cultural heroin" but later became a US senator with Trump's support. Vance, 39, was announced on Monday as Trump's pick for vice...
Bayern hope Kane can 'switch off a bit' after Euro heartbreak
Bayern Munich hope that their star striker Harry Kane will got over England's painful Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain while on holiday and return to the Bundesliga club fully motivated. "We've spoken to Harry. It obviously really hurt. He'll get his three weeks of holiday, like every player, so he can switch off a bit," sporting director Christoph Freund said on Tuesday. Kane had hoped to win a first title of any kind in England's second straight Euro final but they lost 2-1 in Berlin on Sunday. Kane, who was substituted in the second half, named the defeat "extremely painful" and said "it will hurt for a long time." England captain came to Munich last year from Tottenham Hotspur and became Bundesliga top scorer, but Munich finished without a trophy for the first time since 2012. Pre-season training in Munich under new coach Vincent Kompany starts in earnest on Wednesday. Their players at the Euros and Copa America will miss it, and those like Kane who went a long way there will also not be present for Bayern's Asian tour starting on July 31.

Far-right AfD leaders call ban on magazine 'blow' to press freedom
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has sharply criticized the government's ban on the far-right Compact magazine. The decision, announced on Tuesday by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, is "a serious blow to the freedom of the press," said the far-right party's leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla in a joint statement. The two said banning a press organ was "a denial of discourse and diversity of opinion" and accused Faeser of abusing her powers "to suppress critical reporting." Faeser had issued a ban on editor-in-chief Jürgen Elsässer's magazine and had premises associated with the media organization searched in four states. The ban was justified on the grounds that the monthly magazine disseminates "anti-Semitic, racist, anti-minority, historical revisionist and conspiracy theory content."
Your partner has died. Why are friends no longer calling?
Couples often like to hang out with other couples. Whether you meet once a week to play cards or go on holidays together, for many people their partnership and circle of friends are intertwined. But when their partner passes away, many suddenly notice that their mutual friends are no longer inviting them over. Women especially tend to find themselves excluded by their couple friends after their partner's death. "Men are more likely to be pitied, comforted and invited to dinner. However, when women lose a partner, their close circle of friends often withdraws," says grief therapist and author Roland Kachler. Couples in particular...
Merkel, turning 70, honoured as 'hallmark of democracy' by president
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has honoured former chancellor Angela Merkel as a "role model and a hallmark of our democracy" ahead of her 70th birthday. "The special thing about this anniversary is that your 70 years of life can be divided into exactly two halves. The first 35 years until the fall of the Berlin Wall and the second 35 years in the freedom you longed for," Steinmeier wrote in a birthday message. In the second 35 years, Merkel had decisively shaped the path of a united Germany as chancellor, he said. Merkel was chancellor for 16 years, from 2005 to 2021, and...

German football adopts captain-only rule at all levels
Germany is adopting the rule that only team captains can talk to referees at all levels of football with immediate effect. The captain-only rule was rated highly successful at Euro 2024, and will also be used in future European cup matches by UEFA. The German Football Federation (DFB) said on Tuesday it has agreed with its refereeing body and the German Football League (DFL) to introduce it from the Bundesliga to the lowest amateur divisions. Other players trying to argue with a referee face being booked, and apart from improving player conduct the rule is also to benefit the net playing time of matches. "The introduction is not only sensible and practical, it also helps football right down to the grassroots level," DFB referee instructor Lutz Wagner said. "It is also very easy to implement, as it doesn't require any changes to the rules, just a clear definition of the communication process between the referee and the captain. "There will also be a short and concise information sheet for everyone involved so that everyone is on the same page."

"Of course I know where I come from and where my mum comes from....
