Brazilian authorities have recovered the cockpit voice recorder after a plane carrying 61 people on board crashed into a residential area in the city of Vinhedo in the state of São Paulo, the Brazilian air force said late Friday. No one on board survived the crash, which occurred early Friday afternoon. The cause of the crash was initially unclear. The air force said the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder, which has also been recovered, would be examined as soon as possible but cautioned that the outcome was dependent on the extent of damage suffered. Voice recorders record the conversations in...
France claim back-to-back Olympic golds in men's volleyball
In front of a very loud home crowd, France claimed a second consecutive Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games with a 3-0 win against Poland on Saturday. France were dominant to take the first two sets 25-19, 25-20 but had a dramatic end in the third and final set. The home team were leading 24-19, needing one more point to seal the gold medal. But the Polish side, the top ranked team in the world, surged to close the gap to 24-23 as tension increased at the South Paris Arena. A serve error by Wilfredo León, however, handed France the win. The United States claimed the bronze medal on Friday, beating Italy.
UNRWA: 'Another day of horror' in Gaza as Israel strikes school
The leader of the United Nations' agency for Palestinian refugees on Saturday condemned the Israeli strike on a school in Gaza, which Palestinian authorities said left up to 100 people dead. Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), said the incident represented "another day of horror in [Gaza]." "The unbearable cannot become the norm," he added. Lazzarini said all parties to the conflict in Gaza "must protect civilians and civilian infrastructure at all times" and refrain from using "schools and other civilian facilities for military or fighting purposes." The UNRWA chief added: "It’s time for these horrors unfolding under our watch to end." Israel said the building it hit in Gaza City "served as a hideout for Hamas terrorists and commanders."
China win first ever rhythmic gymnastics gold with group title
China won an Olympic rhythmic gymnastics gold for the first time on Friday when they dominated the group competition in Paris. China led on 36.950 points from Ukraine after rotation one, which saw five gymnasts performing with five hoops. The Chinese quintet were third in the second rotation, where the gymnasts used three ribbons and two balls, to finish on 69.800 overall. Israel took silver, their first ever medal in the group competition, while Italy finished with bronze after Tokyo champions Bulgaria were marked down after mistakes in the first section despite topping the second rotation. Russia or the Soviet Union had won 12 of the 17 rhythmic golds at Olympics before Paris, but there was no Russian team in Paris. Only 15 Russians are competing as neutrals in the French capital across all sports due to the war in Ukraine. Individual gold medallist Darja Varfolomeev was not in action in the group competition after Germany flopped in qualifying.

Three German open water swimmers sick after competing in River Seine
Three German open water swimmers are sick after racing in the Olympic 10 kilometre race in the River Seine, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) said on Saturday. The river was used for the Olympic open water/marathon swimming and the triathlons despite repeatedly failing pollution and faeces tests either side of competitions. "Two German open water swimmers received outpatient treatment yesterday for nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. They have been feeling much better since this morning," the DOSB told dpa in a statement. "Another swimmer with similar symptoms is currently being treated by the German team doctors." The DOSB did not disclose names but 2023...
EU's Borrell 'horrified' after latest Israeli attack on Gaza school
The EU's top diplomat, Josep Borrell, has said he is "horrified" after an Israeli airstrike hit a school sheltering residents in Gaza on Saturday, which Palestinian authorities said killed up to 100 people. "At least 10 schools were targeted in the last weeks. There’s no justification for these massacres," he wrote on X. "We are dismayed by the terrible overall death toll," he added, saying that more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began in October. The Palestinian health ministry, which is controlled by the militant Islamist group Hamas, puts the death toll in Gaza at more than 39,600. The...

Only half of Paris Paralympics tickets sold with 18 days to go
Around only a half of tickets for the Paris Paralympics have been sold, two and a half weeks before the start of the event. The Olympics conclude on Sunday and then organizers have a short window to reconfigure venues for the Games for people with disabilities. Paris 2024 chief Tony Estanguet told a news conference they were satisfied with the sales figures, adding that five times as many Paralympics seats are being snapped up now compared to the start of the Olympics. Organizers say more than 3 million tickets have so far been sold for the Paralympics, which will be held from August 28 to 8 September. At the Olympics, 9.5 million of the approximately 10 million tickets were sold - more than ever before in the history of the Games, according to Estanguet. There were also records in terms of the popularity of women's team sports - with 66,000 spectators watching rugby sevens in the Stade de France and 27,000 fans taking in basketball in Lille.

Canada's Katie Vincent defeated Tokyo champion Nevin Harrison of the United States in a photo finish to claim gold in the women's canoe single over 200 metres at the Paris Games on Saturday. Lukashenko says Belarus likely downed some Ukrainian drones
Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko said on Saturday that his country's air defence had been put on full alert following the intrusion of what are believed to be 10 Ukrainian drones into Belarus. He said Belarus reportedly shot down several of the Ukrainian objects, state media reported, but the ruler did not elaborate in this. The intrusion was said to have occurred on Friday. "The Ukrainian armed forces violated all rules of behaviour and violated the airspace of the Republic of Belarus," Lukashenko was quoted as saying. The objects reportedly entered Belarusian airspace in the eastern part of the country in the Kastsyukovichy area, he said. "We suspect that it was combat drones," Lukashenko said. Aircraft and a helicopter were also deployed alongside the air defence on the ground. The information could not be independently verified. Lukashenko, regarded as Europe's last dictator, is one of Russia's most important supporters in its war against Ukraine. At the beginning of the war almost two and a half years ago, Lukashenko allowed Russian troops onto Belarus territory in the south. From there the troops invaded northern Ukraine.
Climate protesters target airport of German resort island Sylt
Two climate protesters glued themselves to the tarmac next to a private jet parked at the airport on the German resort island of Sylt on Saturday. The two women, from the group Last Generation, had also been planning to spray-paint the slogan "Oil kills" onto the aircraft, but they were prevented from doing so by airport staff, the group said. The activists managed to breach the airport fence after cutting a hole into it. A third protester was arrested by police at the fence. The two women have since been freed from the tarmac and been detained. Air traffic in Sylt was not...
Garnbret wins another gold, Raboutou from Boulder second in boulder
Slovenian Janja Garnbret followed Tokyo combined gold with another Olympic speed climbing title when she won the new boulder and lead competition in Paris on Saturday. Brooke Raboutou, born in the US city of Boulder, took boulder and lead silver at the Paris Olympics. It is the first major medal for the 23-year-old American, who finished fifth in the combined event as sport climbing made its Olympic debut in Tokyo three years ago. Raboutou is from a family of climbers and was second in the boulder section with 84.0 points before placing fifth in the lead climb for 72.0 points. It looked like a combined total of 156.0 might be enough until Garnbret struck at the death. World champion Garnbet was best in boulder and third in lead for a winning total of 168.5. Austrian Jessica Pilz took an emotional bronze at the Le Bourget Climbing Venue. Briton Toby Roberts sealed men's gold on Friday. Poland's Aleksandra Miroslaw won women's speed gold earlier in the week, with Indonesia's Veddriq Leonardo taking the men's title.
German open water swimmer Beck sick after competition in River Seine
German open water swimmer Leonie Beck has vomited nine times and has diarrhoea after racing in the Olympic 10 kilometre race in the River Seine. The European champion finished ninth in Thursday's race in the Paris river, which was used for the open water/marathon swimming and the triathlons despite repeatedly failing pollution and faeces tests either side of competitions. The 27-year-old listed her symptoms on Instagram on Saturday. There was no confirmation that her illness was linked to her swim through the river. Media reports in Belgium said one of their swimmers also fell ill after swimming in the Seine. Beck said after Thursday's race: "I hope we don't get anything from it."
Talks with defender Hummels positive, says new Brighton boss
Talks between Germany 2024 World Cup winner Mats Hummels and Brighton have been "very positive," the Premier League club's new German coach said on Saturday. Fabian Hürzeler, who joined Brighton after leading St Pauli to the Bundesliga at just 31, says it is now up to the 35-year-old free agent. "I can say that the conditions are right - otherwise we would not have pursued the matter further. The talks were very positive, both on a professional and private level," Hürzeler told Sky. "We hold each other in high regard, we've had good talks, but at the end of the day the player has to decide for himself whether he can identify 100% with the club. Ultimately, it's about what the player wants and whether he can fully commit. And that's what counts from now on." The centre back is without a club after his contract with Borussia Dortmund expired in June. A move to Italy's Bologna did not materialize despite an offer while media reports say Premier League club West Ham United are also interested.
Serbia bounce back from heartbreaking loss to take basketball bronze
Serbia didn't feel sorry for themselves and bounced back from a heartbreaking defeat to the United States in the semi-finals to take bronze at the Paris Olympic men's basketball tournament. In a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final, Serbia this time got the best of world champions Germany to claim a 93-83 win on Saturday. The Serbians led by 19 points in the third quarter. The Germans made an effort to close the gap, but it wasn't enough, with Isaac Bonga and top star Dennis Schröder recklessly missing precious points in the final two minutes of the game. Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić and Vasilije Micic were Serbia's top scorers with 19 points each. In Thursday's semi-finals, Serbia were en route to stun top favourites US and book a spot in the final as the led by 11 points at half-time and again early in the fourth quarter. But the Americans completed a fantastic comeback led by NBA stars LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. The US will face hosts France later on Saturday for the gold medal. The US are chasing a fifth consecutive and a record-extending 17th overall Olympic gold.
South Korea dominate Germany for women's team table tennis bronze
South Korea overpowered Germany 3-0 to take the bronze medal in the Paris Olympic women's team table tennis competition on Saturday. Mixed doubles bronze medallist Shin Yu Bin and Jeon Ji Hee opened up in the doubles by edging Germany's Wan Yuan and Shan Xiaona 3 games to 2. Lee Eun Hye then hammered Annett Kaufmann 11-8, 11-9, 11-2 in the first singles to leave Jeon to wrap up the bronze with a 11-6, 11-6, 11-6 victory over Shan. Germany can at least be consoled with being the best Europeans in a sport dominating by Asian teams. The final between China and Japan takes place later on Saturday at the South Paris Arena as the Chinese team look to sweep all five Olympic golds in table tennis for the first time.
Horses refuses to jump in another German modern pentathlon drama
German modern pentathlete Annika Zillekens had another Olympics to forget after almost falling in the semi-final on Arezzo de Riverland before the horse then refused to jump an obstacle on Saturday. The Berlin rider therefore just missed out on reaching Sunday's final. At the Tokyo Games three years ago, her horse refused to perform and coach Kim Raisner was sent home after footage showed her punching the animal. Zillekens, then under her maiden name of Schleu, was also criticized in Tokyo for the way she used the whip and treated the horse. The scandal has led to officials deciding to remove show-jumping from the sport after these Games. German team-mate Rebecca Langrehr meanwhile fell while riding before competition. She was not badly injured but was prevented from competing on the horse by the judges and a protest failed. She completed the other four events, but had no chance of making it to the final due to the zero points from the riding section.

At least 100 people were killed and dozens more were wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza City, according to statements by medical and security sources in the Palestinian territory on Saturday. The media office of the Hamas-controlled government in Gaza said that Israel's army attacked the Al-Tabeen school, which was being used as a shelter for displaced persons, during the Islamic morning prayers. Dozens of the victims were burned to death in the attack, according to the office. Qatari-based broadcaster Al Jazeera also reported more than 100 dead, citing the Palestinian civil defence agency. The information could not be independently...
