Macron rejects PM Attal's resignation to ensure stability
French President Emmanuel Macron is refusing to accept Prime Minister Gabriel Attal's resignation following the surprising outcome of the snap parliamentary elections in France, the Élysée Palace announced on Monday. Macron has asked Attal to remain prime minister for the time being in order to ensure the country's stability, it said. Attal announced his resignation on Sunday evening after the preliminary results were announced. France's new left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) alliance aims to quickly agree on a candidate for Attal's successor after its unexpected victory. The NFP bloc consists of the Socialists, the Greens, the Communists and Jean-Luc Mélenchon's hard-left France Unbowed. Official...
Bayern Munich sign Olise, reports say Palhinha transfer close
Bayern Munich have signed French winger Michael Olise from Premier League club Crystal Palace on a five-year contract valid until 2029, Bayern announced on Sunday. The transfer fee is said to be around €60 million ($65 million), plus add-ons. "Michael Olise is a player who can make the difference and attracted great interest with his style of play. We want new impetus in our team, new energy, new ideas – that's what players like Michael Olise stand for," Bayern head of sport Max Eberl said. Olise, 22, scored 10 goals in 19 matches in the Premier League last season. His signing will put...
Orbán's far-right alliance sets up European Parliament group
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's new alliance of far-right parties, the Patriots for Europe, was formally founded as a political group in the European Parliament on Monday. Patriots for Europe will "fight for the future and sovereignty of the European people," Orbán's spokesman, Zoltán Kovács, said on X to announce the group's establishment. It is set to be the parliament's third biggest group. National political parties usually band together into different pan-European groups in the parliament and often vote as single blocs. The Patriots for Europe fulfilled the requirements to set up their new group after political parties from more than seven EU countries, or more than a quarter of EU states, announced their intention to join - a key threshold under the parliament's rules. As well as Orbán's Fidez party, the League party, which is part of the Italian government, France's National Rally, and the Freedom Party from Austria are also part of the group. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is not a member.
Dead battery in your car's key fob? Here's how you can still get in
Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, you needed to put an actual key into a car's door lock to get in. Today, the doors of most modern cars are unlocked by pressing a button on the key. In some cars you can even start the ignition without putting in the key. On most days, this is convenient - but what happens if the battery that powers the transmitter in the key fob dies? There’s no need to panic or even call the breakdown service. How you get in in this case varies from model to model. The necessary...
German Chancellor Scholz invites Germany team to chancellor's office
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has invited the Germany national team to the chancellor's office in a phone conversation with coach Julian Nagelsmann on Sunday, according to government sources. A date hasn't been set yet. Scholz would like to honour the players with a special gesture despite the Euro 2024 exit in the quarter-finals after a 2-1 defeat to Spain in extra time. Scholz was in attendance against Spain, as well as in three other Euro 2024 matches. The only game he missed was the opening match against Scotland because he was at the G7 summit in Italy.
German government relieved about French election outcome
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his entire government are, in his own words, "relieved" about the outcome of the parliamentary elections in France, which saw the far right fail to achieve a breakthrough and an unexpected win for the left. It would have been a major challenge if French President Emmanuel Macron had to agree to work with a right-wing populist party, Scholz said on the fringes of a visit to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) in Nuremberg. "That has now been averted," he added. The secretary general of Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD), Kevin Kühner, reacted more euphorically: "A load...
Zelensky says Russian attack on children's hospital was deliberate
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected Russia's claims that there had been an air defence error causing a deadly strike on a children's hospital in Kiev that caused extensive destruction on Monday, ahead of a NATO summit. "What cynicism the bastards in the Kremlin have shown, that it was allegedly Ukrainian air defence and not a targeted missile strike," Zelensky told a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw. Zelensky thanked all those who have posted videos online "on which it can be seen concretely that it is not just a part of one or another missile, but a direct missile strike that killed and injured many people." Zelensky said 27 people were killed and over 100 others injured across the country in a wave of Russian strikes.
Leaders of Poland and Ukraine sign security accord in Warsaw
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a bilateral security agreement in Warsaw on Monday, a day before the start of a NATO summit in Washington. "Those who defend Ukraine today are also defending themselves," said Tusk. Zelensky called the agreement "ambitious." "It is capable of protecting the lives of our people and resisting Russian evil," said Zelensky. The treaty provides for the development of a plan by which "Russian missiles and drones fired in the direction of Poland can be shot down in Ukrainian airspace," according to the Ukrainian president. The agreement also states that Poland is examining the possibility...
Zelensky meets Poland's leadership in Warsaw ahead of NATO summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet with Polish leaders in Warsaw ahead of the NATO summit in Washington, the Polish government reported on Monday. Zelensky is expected to meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk around midday. Tusk recently announced that he would most likely sign a bilateral security agreement with Zelensky. In the early afternoon on Tuesday, Zelensky is to meet his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda. Poland, an EU and NATO member, is one of the most committed political and military supporters of Ukraine, which has been fending off Russia's full-scale invasion for more than two years. Poland also plays an important...

At least six people injured on day two of Pamplona bull run
At least six people were injured during the second bull run in Pamplona in northern Spain, a spokeswoman for a hospital in the city told public broadcaster RTVE on Monday. The injured runners, including a US citizen, mainly suffered from bruising from falls, despite the fact that the cobblestones of the old town were sprayed with anti-slip agents before the race, as they have been for years. One of the bulls broke off part of one of his horns during the wild chase. Hundreds of people will chase six massive bulls, some weighing over 600 kilograms, and several oxen through Pamplona's narrow alleyways...
Gaza City residents describe 'night of terror' as IDF troops advance
The Israeli military has advanced further into the southern and western regions of Gaza City, which is located in the north of the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported on Monday. In the early hours of Monday, the military began counterterrorism operations in the area and called on civilians to leave before the operation began, it said. IDF troops reached the headquarters of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza City, it said. On Monday, army radio reported clashes with armed members of the Islamist group Hamas, with no initial reports of casualties. The Israeli military has previously advanced into the northern section of the besieged coastal area during war. Residents of the affected neighbourhoods described the overnight advance as a "night of terror," a dpa correspondent reported on Monday.
Kiev children's hospital hit as Russian strikes kill 20 in Ukraine
At least 20 people were killed and more than 50 injured in waves of Russian missile attacks across Ukraine, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Monday, a day before NATO leaders gather in Washington to discuss their support for the government in Kiev. A large children's hospital was struck in Kiev, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. He posted a video on social media showing portions of the building reduced to rubble and traces of blood on the floor of wrecked hospital rooms. He said the exact number of causalities at the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital was still being determined. "Right now, everyone is helping to...
Police record more cases of sexual abuse of children in Germany
The number of known cases of sexual abuse of children and adolescents increased in Germany last year, according to a police report published on Monday. However, as the police assume that there is a large number of unreported cases of this type of offence, this alone is not an alarming finding, the report states. In 2023, the police were notified of 16,375 cases of children being sexually abused - an increase of 5.5% compared to the previous year. In the same period, 1,200 offences were also recorded in which young people were sexually abused. The number of cases involving depictions of the sexual...
No way Putin would attack a NATO country, Orbán says
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said he thinks it impossible that Russian President Vladimir Putin would attack a NATO country. "No serious person can speak of Russia intending to attack NATO," Orbán told the German newspaper Bild in an interview released on Monday. Attacking NATO is completely impossible - not just for Russia, but for anyone in the world - as it is by far the strongest military community, Orbán said. Orbán said that all NATO countries stand behind their promise of collective security, which means that an attack on one NATO ally is an attack all. The Russians have a different history and...
Macron rejects Prime Minister Attal's resignation, asks him to stay
French President Emmanuel Macron is refusing to accept Prime Minister Gabriel Attal's resignation following the surprising outcome of the snap parliamentary elections in France, the Élysée Palace annnounced on Monday. Macron has asked Attal to remain prime minister for the time being in order to ensure the country's stability, it said. Attal announced his resignation on Sunday evening after the preliminary results were announced. Official results released by the Interior Ministry on Monday showed the French left-wing alliance New Popular Front (NFP) emerged as the surprise victor in Sunday's run-off election but it failed to win an absolute majority. The new alliance did not go into the elections with a lead candidate. Macron's centrist Ensemble (Together) bloc came in second place. Marine Le Pen's far-right nationalist National Rally (RN), initially seen as the favourite after the first round of voting, came third. None of the groups achieved an absolute majority, making the formation of a government difficult.
'Sense of relief' in Berlin about French vote, govt spokesman says
The German government has indirectly welcomed the outcome of the parliamentary elections in France. "First of all, there is a certain sense of relief that things that were feared have not materialized," said government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit in Berlin on Monday. "Time will tell and France will decide what happens with this election result," he added. In the decisive round of elections to France's National Assembly on Sunday, the left-wing alliance surprisingly came first, ahead of President Emmanuel Macron's centrist camp in second place and Marine Le Pen's National Rally (RN) in third. Hebestreit did not comment further on the election results. However, he referred to the close Franco-German relationship. Chancellor Olaf Scholz will certainly have the opportunity to discuss the situation with French President Emmanuel Macron at the upcoming NATO summit in Washington, the spokesman said.
Germany's Covid-19 state aid for Lufthansa under EU investigation
The European Commission launched an investigation on Monday to find out if German government state aid for Lufthansa during the Covid-19 pandemic breached EU rules. The investigation comes after a judgement from the EU General Court in May 2023 to annul the state aid awarded to the German airline worth €6 billion ($6.5 billion). In June 2020, the German government granted state aid to Lufthansa worth billions when usually strict subsidy rules were loosened to help support governments impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Travel restrictions during Covid-19 brought Lufthansa's business to a virtual standstill. Tens of thousands of jobs were on the line...
French left poised to pick candidate for prime minister within week
The French left-wing alliance that emerged as the surprise victor in snap parliamentary elections is poised to choose its candidate for prime minister within a week, Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure and other top party officials said on Monday. The New Popular Front (NFP) alliance consists of the Socialists, the Greens, the Communists and Jean-Luc Mélenchon's hard-left France Unbowed. President Emmanuel Macron called the early polls on June 9. The NFP was launched shortly before the first round of elections for the National Assembly on June 30. The short window to prepare meant that the alliance did not go into the elections...
Boeing pleads guilty to fraud to avoid court on 2 fatal Max crashes
US aircraft manufacturer Boeing has pleaded guilty to defrauding the US government to avoid a court case concerning two fatal crashes involving the 737 Max aircraft, according to a document from the US Department of Justice for a court in Texas. The deal, which was agreed late Sunday evening, means the company must pay a multi-million-dollar fine and will also be monitored by a government watchdog. The accidents in October 2018 and March 2019 claimed the lives of 346 people. At the time, Boeing avoided prosecution by promising to implement a compliance and ethics programme. The company also paid a fine of $243.6...
