Twenty dead in Russian attacks on Ukraine as children's hospital hit
At least 20 people have been killed and more than 50 injured in waves of Russian missile attacks across Ukraine, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Monday. Kiev was among the cities worst impacted, along with Kryvyi Rih in southern Ukraine. In Kiev, a large children's hospital was also hit, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The Russian army fired cruise missiles and several Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at targets in the city that is home to 3 million people, the Ukrainian Air Force said. Residents in Kiev's centre heard two dozen explosions, presumably the result of anti-aircraft missiles. Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said debris fell in four of the city's neighbourhoods.

Italian-Swiss electric bubble car Microlino gets power upgrade
The cute Swiss-made Microlino EV, which was inspired by the BMW Isetta bubble car from the 1950s, is now faster than the petrol-powered original and has a new 15 kWh battery option for improved range. The two-seater is classed as a motorcycle and the 15 kWh battery now available gives it a range of up to 228 kilometres in line with the World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC). The Microlino's design attracts more attention than a Lamborghini since, just like in the 1950s, the door is hinged at the front, allowing direct access to the bench seat. For more stability it has two...
German vice chancellor relieved about French election outcome
German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck is relieved about the outcome of the parliamentary elections in France, which saw the far right fail to achieve a breakthrough and a left-wing coalition unexpectedly come out on top. Habeck said that while France now faced the big challenge of forming a government - especially given that no political camp won the 289 seats needed to secure an outright majority in the National Assembly - it was heartening to see how centrist and leftist parties had worked together to prevent France from drifting nationalistic. During a visit to Stuttgart on Monday, the Green party politician called it an "encouraging election result."
German Covid-19 aid for Lufthansa under EU investigation
The European Commission launched an investigation on Monday to find out if German government state aid for Lufthansa during the Covid-19 pandemic breached EU rules. The investigation comes after a decision from the EU General Court in May 2023 to annul the state aid awarded to the German airline. The top competition regulator in the European Union is now assessing whether Lufthansa was eligible for the German state subsidies and the condition of market competition at airports in Germany and Austria. The German government granted state aid to Lufthansa worth billions of euros in June 2020 when usually strict subsidy rules were loosened to help support governments impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Tournament director Lahm praises security measures at Euro 2024
Tournament director Philipp Lahm said he's very satisfied with the security measures at Euro 2024 as the competition enters its final week. "Security was the biggest challenge. And I think a great job has been done," the 2014 World Cup winner told the La Repubblica newspaper in an interview published on Monday. So far, there have been no major incidents or violent episodes between fan groups or between supporters and the police at the tournament. Lahm particularly mentioned the fan marches to the stadiums, "which have never happened before. The fans meet on the city squares and celebrate together: We have worked very hard to make this possible." Even the occasional displeasure with train operator Deutsche Bahn doesn't seem to have affected the tournament director's positive conclusion. Some fans from abroad complained about delays and cancelled trains, and Lahm himself once missed the kick-off of a group stage match due to a delay. "Most of the trains I took were on time or only a few minutes late. We Germans are used to minor delays," Lahm said. Asked if there was anything negative about the tournament, he replied: "The only thing I regret is that the Scottish fans had to go home too early."
Report: Bayern winger Sané undergoes surgery shortly after Euros exit
Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané has undergone groin surgery shortly after Germany's exit from the Euro 2024, the Bild newspaper and broadcasters Sky reported on Monday. Sané has been dealing with pubic bone issues for some time and according to the reports, he hopes to be able to be recovered at the end of July. Despite the long-standing injury, Sané was called up by coach Julian Nagelsmann to Germany's home Euros. The hosts, however, were eliminated following a 2-1 defeat to Spain after extra time in the quarter-finals. Sané started the game against Spain but was subbed off during half-time due to the pain. He will now hope to be free of pain to start the season with Bayern under new coach Vincent Kompany, whom he knows from his time at Manchester City in the Premier League.
French left-wing alliance wins elections, ministry results say
The new left-wing alliance New Popular Front (NFP) in France has won the snap parliamentary elections based on the provisional official results issued by the Interior Ministry on Monday, a day after the second round of voting. President Emmanuel Macron's centrist Ensemble (Together) coalition came in second place. Marine Le Pen's far-right nationalist National Rally (RN), initially seen as the favourite after the first round of voting, came third, the ministry said, without allocating all elected lawmakers to one of the main camps. The lawmakers have until July 18 to form their parliamentary groups. For now, French media are showing a distribution of...
Police record more cases of sexual abuse of children in Germany
The number of known cases of sexual abuse of children and adolescents increased in Germany last year, according to a police report published on Monday. However, as the police assume that there is a large number of unreported cases of this type of offence, this alone is not an alarming finding, the report states. In 2023, the police were notified of 16,375 cases of children being sexually abused - an increase of 5.5% compared to the previous year. In the same period, 1,200 offences were also recorded in which young people were sexually abused. The number of cases involving depictions of the sexual...
French players relieved after parliamentary elections results
The surprising outcome in the second round of the French parliamentary elections on Sunday came as a relief for the national team players ahead of the Euro 2024 semi-final against Spain. The left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) pulled off a surprise and came out on top, with the far-right National Rally party, which was leading after the first round, falling to third place. "Long live diversity, long live the Republic, long live France," forward Marcus Thuram wrote on Instagram. He congratulated everyone who "responded to the threat that had loomed over our beautiful country" and ended his message saying: "The fight continues." Thuram is...
Marston's to sell 40% stake in brewing joint venture to Carlsberg
Marston's, a British pub and hotel operator, announced Monday a binding agreement to sell the whole of its 40% interest in brewing joint venture, Carlsberg Marston's Limited or CMBC, to a subsidiary of Carlsberg for £206 million ($263 million) in cash. With the sale of its remaining non-core brewing assets, the company now will be a pure play hospitality business entirely focused on pubs. The Board of Marston's has unanimously approved the deal, which is expected to be completed before the end of September 2024. Marston's plans to use the net proceeds to de-leverage, including paying down the private placement and banking facilities. Following this, Marston's expects the Marston's Group's overall interest expense to reduce by around £18 million annually versus the Board's current expectations. It is agreed that CMBC will continue to supply Marston's through the long-term brand distribution agreement that was entered into upon formation of CMBC in 2020.

Danish brewery group Carlsberg and Britvic, a British producer of soft drinks, on Monday said they have agreed on the terms whereby Carlsberg's unit Carlsberg UK Holdings Limited will acquire Britvic for an enterprise value of about £4.1 billion ($5.2 billion) to be paid in cash. The acquisition values at nearly £3.3 billion on a fully diluted basis. Carlsberg plans to create a single beverage company in the UK, to be named Carlsberg Britvic. The company intends to take advantage of the highly synergistic relationship between beer and soft drinks, including within the areas of procurement, production, warehousing and distribution to increase...
German defence minister visits military exercise in Alaska
Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Alaska on Sunday ahead of a NATO summit in Washington to learn about the progress of Arctic Defender, a German-led multinational military exercise. "We Europeans are taking responsibility within the NATO alliance for the security and defence of Europe," Pistorius said. Arctic Defender, he said, was a clear signal, in particular from Germany, intended to demonstrate awareness for the threats facing not just Europe but the Arctic as well, a region of growing geostrategic importance when it comes to dealing with Russia. Arctic Defender involves fighter pilots from several countries training in Alaska alongside the US...
Brazilian biologist steps on venomous snakes 40,000 times for study
A Brazilian biologist used an unusual method to study the biting behaviour of venomous snakes. João Miguel Alves-Nunes from the Butantan Research Centre in São Paulo, Brazil lightly kicked Jararaca lance snakes - a widespread and highly venomous viper species in south-eastern Brazil - over 40,000 times using a specially made protective boot. His findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports, reveal crucial insights into snake bite incidents in the region, which account for a significant portion of the 20,000 poisonings reported annually in Brazil. The snakes were not harmed during the tests that he conducted with his team from Butantan Research Centre...
The mystery of Haiti’s missing cultural artefacts
They are the prized bounty of Haiti’s hard-fought struggle for freedom, taken in battle from European powers and then placed on top of the country’s most revered monument, Citadelle Henry, to guard against French occupation. National treasures, the 18th century cannons are priceless and come in various weights and dimensions. The largest of them, cast in iron, flank the mountaintop fortress outside of the northern city of Cap-Haïtien in the rural town of Milot. Smaller ones, cast in bronze with intricate markings hinting at their origins, have been safely tucked away behind locked doors in a museum open only to dignitaries,...
Cool 'granfluencers' are embracing age with style on social media
Günther Krabbenhöft, a 79-year-old Berlin native, embodies the adage "age is just a number" in his viral videos as he dances to techno beats alongside much younger crowds in Berlin, sporting an elegant ensemble complete with a Panama hat and tailored waistcoat. Krabbenhöft, a grandfather to two, proudly tells dpa about his journey to amassing over 300,000 Instagram followers. His personal expression takes precedence - he dances for himself, dresses for himself, and pays little heed to trends, he says. Granfluencers: A global phenomenon The notion that social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok are solely domains of the young is being debunked by...
Republicans cite Europe on abortion but laws there protect women more
Since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago, Republicans on Capitol Hill and conservative justices have regularly cited European laws barring abortion after the first trimester of pregnancy to argue for similar policy in the United States. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. both cited European abortion limits in their opinions in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. More recently, South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has called for a national ban on abortion after 15 weeks of gestation, told reporters on Capitol Hill that a first-trimester abortion...
June marks 13th straight month of record global average temperature
Last month was hotter than any June ever recorded, marking the 13th consecutive month in which the global average temperature reached a record value for the respective month, the EU's climate change service Copernicus said on Monday. Temperatures in June were also 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, marking the 12th consecutive month in which the 1.5-degree-Celsius mark was met or surpassed, according to the monthly report. At the 2015 climate conference in Paris, the global community set itself the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels. For the period from July 2023 to June 2024, the global...
German far-right AfD unable to fill 120 seats after local elections
Following local elections in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, 162 seats remain vacant, with 120 belonging to the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, the state election officer said upon request. In the local elections held at the beginning of June, the AfD came out on top with 28.1% of the votes, narrowly beating the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with 26.8%. However, not all seats could be filled. In some cases this is due to parties having received more votes than they can accept based on their lists, according to a spokeswoman for the state election officer. Meanwhile some candidates did not accept their mandates, she added. Some 4,400 seats were up for grabs in Saxony-Anhalt's city and district council elections, with some 3.7% - or 162 seats - now vacant. According to local electoral law, they cannot be filled until after a new electoral term begins.

Bayern Munich have signed French winger Michael Olise from Premier League club Crystal Palace on a five-year contract valid until 2029, Bayern announced on Sunday. The transfer fee is said to be around €60 million ($65 million), plus add-ons. "Michael Olise is a player who can make the difference and attracted great interest with his style of play. Olise, 22, scored 10 goals in 19 matches in the Premier League last season. His signing will put...
