Berlin police stop Turkey fan march due to wolf salute
Berlin police have stopped a Turkey fan march before the Euro 2024 quarter-final against the Netherlands because many supporters gave the controversial wolf salute. A fan march is "not a platform for political messages," the police announced on X. The furore started when Turkey defender Merih Demiral received a two-match ban from tournament organizer UEFA for giving the gesture - which critics see as a far-right symbol - after his second goal in the last-16 win over Austria. The wolf salute usually expresses affiliation with the Turkish far-right Ülkücü movement. It is said to be a symbol against ethnic minorities in and around Turkey but Turkish politicians and football officials say it is just a sign of "Turkishness" and the ban is disgraceful. The wolf gesture is used in Turkey by the ultra-nationalist MHP party, which is a partner of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government. Erdogan is due in Berlin for the match and ultra fans have called on Turks to repeat the salute during the match at Berlin's Olympiastadion.
IDF continues operations, Gaza authorities say 87 dead in past 2 days
The Israel Defense Forces said they are continuing operations in several areas of the Gaza Strip in a post on X on Saturday. The health authorities in Gaza said at least 87 people were killed in the past two days. The Israeli army said several armed Hamas members who had attacked soldiers were killed in the neighbourhood of Shejaiya in the city of Gaza. Soldiers also discovered tunnels and longer-range rockets during the operation, which has been ongoing there since the end of June, which indicates "a renewed attempt by the enemy to establish a base in the area," the army said. Israel's military...

Following news of the death, the post-stage awards ceremony was cancelled. It is unclear whether the final stage from Kufstein to Kühtai will take place on Sunday. Drege rode for the Norwegian continental team Coop-Repsol. The 25-year-old had already achieved minor successes...
German chancellor defends 2025 budget in face of opposition scorn
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday defended the compromise over the 2025 federal budget arrived at by his three-party coalition in the face of scorn from the opposition. A way had been found to fund assistance to Ukraine, while also financing Germany's own needs, Scholz told a meeting of his Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Weimar to the south-west of Berlin. "And for that reason, it's a good budget that the federal government has agreed after a long time and a sleepless night," Scholz said, acknowledging that the three-party coalition had wrangled over it. The heads of the SPD, the Greens and the...
Retiring Kroos apologizes to Pedri for foul which threatens his Euros
Toni Kroos has apologized to Spain's Pedri after his early foul in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals left the 21-year-old with a knee injury. Pedri had to be substituted after just 9 minutes of Spain's 2-1 extra-time win on Friday and his further participation in the Euros is unclear. Several Spanish media reports on Saturday said he is out of the tournament but coach Luis de la Fuente was more optimistic after Friday's game. Spain face France in the semi-finals on Tuesday. The robust challenge was one of the last major acts of Kroos' football career, as he retired after the game. "Sorry and get well soon," the 34-year-old former Real Madrid star wrote on Instagram on Saturday to the Barcelona midfielder. "Of course it wasn't my intention to hurt you. A speedy recovery and all the best. You're a top player."
Tears and praise after Germany's Euro exit, next stop World Cup
The German host team left their Euro 2024 base camp on Saturday and coach Julian Nagelsmann revealed that many tears flowed until deep in the night following the quarter-final exit against Spain. Nagelsmann told reporters on Saturday that the players sat together for hours and wished they could play the final minutes again after being ousted by Mikel Merino's 119th-minute header. "We would have liked to have given the fans more. We would have liked to have won the title," Nagelsmann said. Players left the camp at the headquarters of sports goods maker Adidas in mini buses and private vehicles and will not...
Japan's Asano leaves Bochum for Mallorca
Japan forward Takuma Asano signed for Mallorca from Bundesliga side Bochum on Saturday. The 29-year-old - at Bochum since 2021 - has left on a free transfer and penned a two-year deal, the LaLiga club said in a statement. Asnao scored six goals in 31 league and play-off matches last term. Bochum saved their Bundesliga status with an incredible comeback to beat Fortuna Dusseldorf in the play-off. They lost 3-0 at home before winning 3-0 away and then prevailing on penalties. Asano arrives in Mallorca just days after Borussia Dortmund's Mateu Morey returned to his youth side on the Spanish island.

Toni Kroos received an emotional tribute from his wife while his birthplace of Greifswald plans to honour its famous son after his glittering career ended with Germany's 2-1 defeat against Spain in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. "You are our hero and I thank you that you took me along on this journey and that I can be your wife," Jessica Kroos said on Instagram. "We are really looking forward to having you spend more time with us but we will also miss you a lot on the pitch," the mother of four said. "Unfortunately, you can't see the pride in your kids' eyes...
Merino's corner flag dance sums up Spain's super subs
Spain will need their squad players more than ever in the Euro 2024 semi-final with France but the fact both scorers in Friday's win over Germany were substitutes bodes well for the team. Mikel Merino's header late in extra time sealed a 2-1 victory over the hosts but the game came at a cost with defenders Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand now suspended for the last four after a red card and another booking respectively. Pedri also limped off early but Dani Olmo - who plays in Germany for RB Leipzig - came on in Stuttgart and scored a classy opener...
Top German officials praise team as players head home after Euro exit
The German host team left their Euro 2024 base camp on Saturday after their quarter-final exit the previous day, with officials praising the players for a strong tournament despite the heartbreak against Spain. Players left the camp at the headquarters of sports goods maker Adidas in mini buses and private vehicles and will not meet again until September for Nations League matches against Hungary and the Netherlands. Mikel Merino's 119th-minute header ended German dreams but sporting director Rudi Völler and German FA president Bernd Neuendorf saluted the team and coach Julian Nagelsmann one last time. "We suffered a defeat but didn't fail. We...

Tens of thousands of spectators crowded the square, most of them dressed in traditional white, waving red scarves and shouting "Viva San Fermín." RTVE state television carried the ceremony of the increasingly controversial but popular event live. "I'm very moved. My father always watched it on television and dreamed of being here one day, He didn't manage it, and he's no longer with us. I'm here for...
Spain's controversial Pamplona bull run festival gets under way
The famous running of the bulls event in Pamplona, northern Spain, kicked off on Saturday, despite protests from animal rights activists. The bull runs are part of the nine-day San Fermín Festival held in the city at the beginning of July each year. The festival officially kicked off at midday with the traditional Chupinazo, the firing of a small rocket from the town hall balcony, in front of thousands of spectators. The first of several bull runs will be held from Sunday. The festival is dedicated to Pamplona's city saint San Fermín and dates back to the end of the 16th century. While the San Fermín Festival also includes numerous concerts and processions, the bull runs and bullfights are the highlight of the festivities. Each day between July 7 and 14, hundreds of people will chase six massive bulls, some weighing over 600 kilograms, and several oxen through the city's narrow alleyways into an arena where bullfights are held in the evening. Every year, several people are injured the 875 metre long course. Animal rights activists have been protesting the bull runs for years. Despite this, the festival continues to attract thousands of visitors from all over the world, mainly from Europe, Australia, Asia and the US.
