Best-selling singer mobilizes against right ahead of French poll
The world's best-selling French singer Aya Nakamura has called for a blockade of the far-right ahead of the final round of the country's general election this weekend. "I am well placed to understand and know the importance of racism in our country," the French-Malian singer wrote on X. "Now I understand that my position as an artist requires me to speak out, because this is an important moment for all of us," the 29-year-old went on. "So on Sunday we will all go to the polls and vote against the one extreme to condemn because there is only one." Nakamura is expected to sing at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris on July 26 at the request of President Emmanuel Macron. Although neither Macron nor the singer have confirmed the possible appearance so far, the popular singer, who grew up in a Paris suburb, has been the target of serious racist attacks from the far right. Numerous French star footballers have also warned unequivocally against Marine Le Pen's National Rally coming to power in France, including the captain of the national team, Kylian Mbappé.
Ullrich praise for Pogacar: 'The yellow jersey is giving him wings'
Former Tour de France champion Jan Ullrich has heaped praise on Tadej Pogacar after the Slovenian reclaimed the yellow jersey in impressive fashion in the Alps on Tuesday. Germany's only Tour winner Ullrich, in 1997, was a Eurosport pundit for the first time since confessing to doping practices in November, and hopes for rehabilitation. He has said that cycling remains his love, and he spoke highly of the 2020 and 2021 winner Pogacar who is seeking a first Giro d'Italia/Tour double since Marco Pantani in 1998 after winning the Italian race in May. Pogacar left all rivals behind in the final stages of the gruelling climb up the Col du Galibier to win the fourth stage of the 111th Tour in style. "The yellow jersey is giving him wings," Ullrich said. "Pogacar has this ease. He can handle the pressure. He knows what he's capable of and knows what his team is capable of."
'Land of Women' on Apple TV+: A lovely and satisfying escape
As a professional reviewer of television I am regularly asked "What should I watch?" — a question I answer with the question, "Well, what do you like?" One can discuss the quality, the technique, the structure of a series in a relatively objective, analytical way, but taste is a matter of … taste. Some celebrated series that attract awards like a magnet does iron filings, while I might praise their craft and artfulness, are just not my thing. I might find them admirable yet not exciting. Every critic knows the feeling. Indeed, were I to catalogue my favourite series over the...
Late Malen brace sends Dutch into quarters with 3-0 win over Romania
Donyell Malen scored a late brace as the Netherlands defeated Romania 3-0 on Tuesday to reach the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, after they wasted a host of chances earlier in the match. Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo had a brilliant performance and scored the opener in the 20th minute. What followed was a festival of missed opportunities, that included captain Virgil van Dijk hitting the post and a offside goal from Gakpo, before substitute Malen secured success in the 83rd and in the third minute of stoppage time. Romania were never really out of the game befor Malen's efforts, but also didn't manage to create any real threat, when one goal could have been enough to keep their dream alive. The Netherlands will now meet either group stage opponents Austria or Turkey in the quarter-finals on July 6 in Berlin, where they were defeated 3-2 by the Austrians a week ago.
Terminally ill mother of freed Gaza hostage Noa has died
Just over three weeks after 26-year-old hostage Noa Argamani was rescued from captivity in the Gaza Strip, her terminally ill mother Liora has died, Israeli sources said on Tuesday. The cause of death was cancer, according to the Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv and the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which was created after hundreds of people were abducted in last October's attack on southern Israel by Hamas gunmen. Liora Argamani, who was reportedly 61 at the time of her death, made a series of emotional videos appealing to her daughter's captors to allow her to see her again before she died. In...

Trump's hush money trial likely delayed after US Supreme Court ruling
Following a landmark ruling by the US Supreme Court on the immunity of US presidents, there are indications of a delay in the sentencing of Donald Trump in his New York trial. The public prosecutor's office wrote in a letter to the judge in charge, Juan Merchan, that it had no objections to a later date for the announcement of the sentence. For its part, the prosecution asked for a deadline of July 24 to respond to a motion by Trump to vacate the conviction. If Merchan agrees, the sentencing announcement set for July 11 would be delayed by at least two...

The man who climbed under the roof of the Dortmund stadium during Germany's Euro 2024 last-16 win over Denmark may have to pay for the police operation he triggered. "The Dortmund police headquarters is currently examining whether costs can be charged in this case," a police spokesperson told dpa. The man from Osnabrück was spotted climbing on the beams under the roof on Saturday. Police kept him under surveillance until the end of the match, when a special task force removed and arrested the 21-year-old. A helicopter was even used. The day after the incident, police announced that the man had only wanted...
German police officer steals 180kg of cheese and loses job
A German police officer stole around 180 kilograms of cheddar cheese from an overturned lorry after an accident and lost his job as a result. The Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Administrative Court rejected an appeal by the man on Tuesday, meaning his previous conviction stands. The police officer had worked for the motorway police and was supposed to secure the scene of an accident, the court said. He had driven a police bus to the vicinity of the damaged lorry container and asked the employee of a salvage company there to hand him several packages of cheese. He stole a total of nine cheese parcels, each...
Zoom lag? MIT makes receiver to cut streaming and call interference
Scientists and engineers at one of the world’s leading universities have come up with a wireless receiver that blocks interference and improves mobile phone call quality. According to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the gadget "cancels out unwanted signals at the earliest opportunity" and "could help mitigate signal quality issues that can lead to slow and choppy Zoom calling or video streaming." The MIT team's newly developed "millimeter-wave multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless receiver" is able to more quickly "handle stronger spatial interference than previous designs" and "before unwanted signals have been amplified." The technology is needed as airwaves have been made increasingly crowded by the "growing prevalence of high-speed wireless communication devices, from 5G mobile phones to sensors for autonomous vehicles," according to MIT, which was ranked top of the recently-published QS World University Rankings. A "special circuit" in the device "can block up to four times more interference than some similar devices" and "can be switched on and off as needed to conserve energy." The team said they aim to make the receiver work in 6G mobile devices, which could, if and when they become commercially viable, lead to data transmissions of up to 100 gigabytes a second.

Germany not intimidated by Spain as Sané names another start unclear
Germany have plenty of quality to unsettle Spain in their Euro 2024 quarter-final, captain Ilkay Gündogan and forward Leroy Sané said on Tuesday as preparations for the big match started without midfielder Emre Can. "I believe that we definitely don't have to hide from Spain, we also have extreme qualities," Barcelona midfielder Gündogan told public broadcasters ARD. "I think the Spaniards have more respect for us than they publicly admit." Can should be fit but line-up unclear Can, 30, was the only member of the 26-man squad missing from the training pitch in Herzogenaurach, with Germany citing stress management as the reason. It was Germany's...

Scholz had promised compensation for the approximately 40,000 victims of the German occupation of Poland who are still alive, but he did not say when and how much compensation would be paid. Tusk described the Scholz's announcement as a step in the right direction. "There is no...

Spain captain Morata set to stay at Atlético Madrid
Spain captain Álvaro Morata appears to have no intention to leave Atlético Madrid amid reports of a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia. "I can't imagine what it must be like to win something in this shirt and I won't stop until I've done it," Morata said in a post on his personal and Atletico's Instagram account on Tuesday. Morata played for Real Madrid 2010-2014 and arrived at Atlético in 2019 after spells at Juventus and Chelsea. He played again at Juve on loan 2020-2022, which made him miss Atlético's last title to date, the 2021 La Liga trophy. Morata, 31, reportedly had an offer from Saudi Pro League club Al Qadsiah who are coached by Spain's Michel. He has a contract until 2026 but has complained that he is not appreciated in his home country. "The easiest thing for me is not to play in Spain. For my life, for what I have to experience when I take to the streets in our country," he said at the start of Euro 2024 where Spain face hosts Germany in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Bayern Munich have given young talent Arijon Ibrahimović a new professional contract until June 2027, the Bundesliga club said on Tuesday. For the new season, he will be part of the squad led by new coach Vincent Kompany, the Bavarians said. "The season in the Italian Serie A brought me forward as a person and footballer and I learned a lot. Now I can't wait to get started here," Ibrahimović said. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund added: "Arijon Ibrahimović was able to gain valuable experience at the age of just 17 last season – not just on the pitch – at Frosinone Calcio, in one of Europe's top leagues. That's brought him on enormously and now he's getting the chances to impress in our first team."
