Spain captain Morata set to stay at Atlético Madrid
Spain captain Álvaro Morata appears to have no intention to leave Atlético Madrid amid reports of a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia. "I can't imagine what it must be like to win something in this shirt and I won't stop until I've done it," Morata said in a post on his personal and Atletico's Instagram account on Tuesday. Morata played for Real Madrid 2010-2014 and arrived at Atlético in 2019 after spells at Juventus and Chelsea. He played again at Juve on loan 2020-2022, which made him miss Atlético's last title to date, the 2021 La Liga trophy. Morata, 31, reportedly had an offer from Saudi Pro League club Al Qadsiah who are coached by Spain's Michel. He has a contract until 2026 but has complained that he is not appreciated in his home country. "The easiest thing for me is not to play in Spain. For my life, for what I have to experience when I take to the streets in our country," he said at the start of Euro 2024 where Spain face hosts Germany in the quarter-finals on Friday.

The 18-year-old forward has been at Bayern since 2018, but spent last season on loan at Serie A side Frosinone. For the new season, he will be part of the squad led by new coach Vincent Kompany, the Bavarians said. "The season in the Italian Serie A brought me forward as a person and footballer and I learned a lot. Now I can't wait to get started here," Ibrahimović said. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund added: "Arijon Ibrahimović was able to gain valuable experience at the age of just 17 last season – not just on the pitch – at Frosinone Calcio, in one of Europe's top leagues. That's brought him on enormously and now he's getting the chances to impress in our first team."

The 55-year-old nationalist politician was responding to claims that her party does not have enough suitable personnel to govern. Le Pen said she did not want to take...

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to consider a ceasefire in the war with Russia, as he made his first visit to Kiev since the start of the conflict in February 2022. "International diplomatic rules are slow and complicated. I have asked President [Zelensky] to consider whether it would not be possible to reverse the order and speed up the peace negotiations with a quick ceasefire," said Orbán after a meeting with Zelensky in the Ukrainian capital, according to a report by the Hungarian news agency MTI. There are currently no negotiations between Kiev and Moscow...
We are the best team, says Spain's Oyarzabal before Germany clash
Spain's reserve striker Mikel Oyarzabal is in confident mood ahead of Friday's Euro 2024 quarter-final with hosts Germany in Stuttgart. "We have to be prepared for everything against Germany. They are a great team, it will be a very difficult game," the 27-year-old told a news conference at Spain's Donaueschingen camp on Tuesday. "But we have confidence in ourselves. Germany train without Can, Sané says start against Spain not certain
Germany started their preparations for the European Championship quarter-final against Spain without midfielder Emre Can on Tuesday. The 30-year-old was the only member of the 26-man squad missing from the training pitch in Herzogenaurach, with Germany citing stress management as the reason. It was Germany's first training session since the 2-0 last-16 win over Denmark on Saturday. Players had been given two days to unwind. Can seems likely to be fit for Friday's clash in Stuttgart. Centre back Jonathan Tah is also pushing to start after his suspension against Denmark let in the impressive Nico Schlotterbeck. Left back David Raum fought his way into...
Swiss coach plays down commitment question with all eyes on England
Switzerland coach Murat Yakin has brushed aside speculation that he is working on his future as well as preparing for the European Championship quarter-final against England. "There is no reason to discuss my future now," the 49-year-old told reporters at the Swiss training camp in Stuttgart on Tuesday. He said his focus is solely on Saturday's game in Dusseldorf. Yakin's contract expires after the tournament. The Swiss FA offered him an extension earlier this year but he turned it down. "We have had good conversations, we will tackle the whole thing after the European Championship and look for a possible solution," Yakin said. After a mixed qualifying campaign, Yakin was heavily criticized at home. But after almost beating hosts Germany and outplaying Italy in the last 16 at Euro 2024, the mood has changed. Media reports have said Saudi Arabian clubs are interested in Yakin but he said: "There is no other offer." England have laboured through the tournament so far and Yakin expects an open game. Captain Granit Xhaka is currently training individually due to adductor problems but a scan revealed that there is no serious injury and his participation against England is not jeopardized.
How one manufacturer wants to change e-bike rides with the help of AI
Artificial intelligence will change how we go for e-bike rides in future, according to one major manufacturer that has unveiled a means to use this emerging software to rule out range issues and find more comfortable routes in battery-assisted bicycles. At the Eurobike bicycle fair in Frankfurt, German technology company Bosch presented a new AI solution called Range Control designed to make planning tours with e-bikes easier. The navigation software uses AI to "learn" from live data, while taking into account various parameters such as the total weight, the route's elevation profile and individual riding habits to calculate the battery charge level...
Research shows acid in olives could help with obesity and diabetes
A team of US scientists have found a compound in olives that they believe could help against diabetes and obesity. Researchers from the university Virginia Tech carried out tests on mice showing that elenolic acid, a compound found in olives, lowers blood sugar and appears to promote weight loss. While there is not enough of the acid in olives for it to work naturally, the team said their research could "pave the way to the development of safe and inexpensive natural products for managing obesity and type 2 diabetes in people." "Lifestyle modifications and public health measures have had limited impact on the...

Shell aims to address several challenges and ensure the future competitiveness of the plant in light of current market conditions, it said in a statement. Huibert Vigeveno, Director Downstream, Renewables and Energy Solutions at Shell, said: "Pausing construction now will give us the time to assess the most commercial path forward for the project."
Germany's new 100 metres star Ansah says racist comments spur him on
German's new 100 metres star Owen Ansah believes racist comments about him online show he is doing something right. Ansah won the national championships in Braunschweig on Saturday in 9.99 seconds, becoming the first German to break the 10-second barrier in regular wind conditions. Soon afterwards, racist comments appeared online, but the 23-year-old is unperturbed. "I don't really give a damn. It goes in one ear and out the other. I have my friends and family with me and my people who support me. Of course there are always haters, but that doesn't bother me at all," he told broadcaster NDR on Tuesday. "Comments like that always spur me on to continue in the same way. They show that I'm on the right track. I'm now getting the attention we (as German athletes) all deserve." Ansah, whose father is from Ghana, now wants to focus on the Paris Olympics from July 26-August 11. The German Athletics Association (DLV) is considering filing criminal charges against the internet trolls. "This is the right way to go, because these are things that you cannot do," he added.
Multivitamin supplements don't lengthen lifespans, research shows
They are the nutrition top-up of choice for millions of people, but if you think swallowing multivitamins will help you live a day longer than otherwise, you’re probably wrong. A team of US doctors and scientists studied around 300,000 people over 20 years and found taking the would-be elixirs "was not associated with a mortality benefit." "Multivitamin use to improve longevity is not supported" by their research, the team said, in findings published by JAMA Network Open, an American Medical Association journal. Despite multivitamins making little apparent difference to longevity, including among unhealthy people or poor eaters, "many US adults report using [them]...
Germany plans aid for surviving Nazi victims in Poland, Scholz says
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany is planning to provide aid for surviving victims of the Nazi occupation in Poland during World War II. "Germany is aware of the gravity of its guilt, of its responsibility for the millions of victims of the German occupation and of the mission that arises from it," Scholz said in Warsaw at a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk following joint government consultations. Germany stands by its historical responsibility without any ifs, ands or buts, he said. "The situation of elderly victims is one that concerns us greatly, and we will also take action in this regard." Scholz did not say when or how much compensation would be paid to the approximately 40,000 victims of the German occupation of Poland who are still alive. Responsibility for the past also means responsibility for the common future, Scholz continued. "Poland's security is also Germany's security." Cooperation in the area of security and defence should be expanded in a targeted manner, he added. Together, Germany and Poland stand firmly by the side of the Ukrainians, the chancellor said.
Israeli army attacks rocket launch pads in south Gaza, thousands flee
The Israeli army said it had attacked rocket launch pads in the south of Gaza during the night following rocket fire from the coastal strip. In order to avoid civilian casualties, residents of eastern neighbourhoods of the city of Khan Younis were asked to leave the affected area, the army said. According to eyewitness reports, thousands of people fled to supposed safe zones further west, but these were already overcrowded. There was initially no information about possible casualties. An estimated 1.7 million Palestinians, around 85% of the population in the Gaza Strip, has been displaced in the wake of Israel's offensive since October...
