Belgian own goal lifts France into Euro 2024 quarter-finals
Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen scored a late own goal to hand France a 1-0 win on Monday and a spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. Substitute Randal Kolo Muani had the ball in the area and shot towards goal in the 85th minute. It went into the net, but only after it deflected from Vertonghen's leg over goalkeeper Koen Casteels into the far corner. Both sides failed to present a good performance at the tournament so far, but France had the final word in the last 16 clash, and again helped by an own goal - as they were in their only...
You found a young, chirping bird: What do you do?
Chirping and vulnerable-looking birds can look like they're calling out for your help, but we humans can quickly do more harm than good in these situations. Young birds tend not to be as helpless or orphaned as they may seem, which is why German's Nature And Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) advises you to stop and intervene only when it makes sense. Particularly noisy are fledglings that have opened their eyes and have feathers, but have not yet learned to fly. Their parents still feed them insects and use calls to communicate with them. So how can you tell if these little birds need...

Rangnick seeks Euros history with Austria at site of past success
Austria coach Ralf Rangnick hopes that an emotional return to the city of Leipzig will end with a first ever place in the quarter-finals at a European Championship on Tuesday. Austria play Turkey in the last 16 at the home of RB Leipzig, where Rangnick was sporting director and coach 2012-2019, overseeing their meteoric rise from the fourth tier into the Bundesliga. "I'm delighted that we're here, also for the lads who have made their contribution here for many years. I hope that the Austria fans and and many Leipzig fans, who hopefully have tickets, will support us," Rangnick told reporters on Monday. Midfielders Christoph Baumgartner...

The two-time European champions are yet to score from open play in the competition after being held to a goalless draw with the Netherlands and a 1-1 with Poland, in which Kylian Mbappé converted a penalty. France will now play Portugal or Slovenia in the quarter-finals in Hamburg on July 5.
US Supreme Court rules presidents have immunity for official acts
In a significant partial win for former US president Donald Trump, the US Supreme Court ruled on Monday that presidents have presumed immunity from prosecution for official acts while in office. The judges returned the case, an appeal of an earlier ruling, to the lower court and instructed that court to determine how the decision should be applied to Trump's case. This is likely to further delay the start of a possible trial against Trump for attempted election fraud in the US capital Washington in connection with the January 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol by Trump's supporters. It is considered unlikely...
Lufthansa Group airlines to cancel night flights to Lebanon
German carrier Lufthansa said Monday that airlines in the Lufthansa Group will temporarily suspends night flights to and from Beirut due to the worsening conflict between the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and the Israeli military. "Due to current developments in the Middle East, the airlines of the Lufthansa Group will suspend their night flights to and from Beirut (Lebanon) from June 29th to July 31st," the Group said in response to a query by dpa. Daytime flights to and from Beirut would continue to be offered unchanged, it said. The Foreign Office in Berlin has been warning Germans against travelling to Lebanon for some time in view of the current conflict with Israel. German citizens are urgently asked to leave the country. “A further aggravation of the situation and expansion of the conflict cannot be ruled out,” said the Foreign Office.

A remote-controlled car is expected to fetch more than a quarter of a million pounds at auction to become the “most expensive” in the world, according to experts. The vehicle, which has a top speed of just under 80 km/h, is a scale model of the Ferrari F2002 driven by Michael Schumacher when he became Formula One world champion in 2002, and is a third of its size. The car will be auctioned with a guide price of £200,000 ($253,000) at the UK's Whittlebury Park, Silverstone, along with 60 other items of motor racing memorabilia on Thursday, three days before the British...

Growing evidence that weight-loss drugs could benefit obese teenagers
There is “growing evidence” that weight-loss drugs could be effective in treating severely obese teenagers, a specialist in adolescent obesity has said. The medication acts “in exactly the same way” in younger patients as it does in adults, they claim, and while no evidence exists for use in patients under the age of 12, it “may be justified” in extreme cases. The comments were made by Professor Louise Baur, an obesity paediatrician and professor of paediatrics at the University of Sydney in Australia, during a presentation at the International Congress on Obesity in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Prof Baur, who is president of the...
People who dance are more open and less neurotic, researchers show
People who cut up the dance floor tend to be more agreeable and more open than wallflowers, according to an analysis at German research institute Max-Planck-Gesellchaft which studied professional and amateur dancers in Germany and Sweden. People who dance were found to be more extroverted and less neurotic than others, including even musicians who aren't the dancing kind, according to the study, published in the science journal Personality and Individual Differences. "Both dancers and singers show a high degree of extraversion in their personality — which may be due to the fact that their means of expression when dancing and singing is...
'A new tournament starts' - Dutch want to deliver against Romania
The Netherlands are determined to rebound from a modest Euro 2024 group stage when they take on Romania in the last 16 on Tuesday in the city where they celebrated their biggest success in international football. The Dutch won Euro 1988 in then West Germany by beating the Soviet Union 2-0 in the final in Munich's Olympic Stadium, with the help of Marco van Basten's wonder goal. The class of 2024 is far from that form after a group stage in which they laboured to a 2-1 victory over Poland, drew 0-0 with France and lost 3-2 against Austria. Coach Ronald Koeman, who...
German court rules that members of far-right AfD cannot own firearms
Members of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party cannot legally possess firearms under the country's weapons law because the party has been deemed a suspected extremist group. The Dusseldorf Administrative Court ruled on Monday that a married couple must surrender all of their firearms, dismissing a lawsuit brought by the couple over the revocation of their firearms possession permits. Germany's BfV domestic intelligence agency has formally placed the AfD under suspicion of working to undermine the country's democratic constitution. That was upheld in May by an administrative court, which rejected an AfD lawsuit over the designation. The married couple have a large number of firearms - 197 weapons in the case of the husband and 27 weapons in the case of the wife - which they must now either turn over or destroy. They are also required to give up any ammunition. The Dusseldorf court, however, will allow an appeal against the decision because of its potentially important implications for other members of the political party.

World Athletics has pledged further financial support to Ukrainian athletes in response to Russia's war on the country, the sport's global governing body said in a statement on Monday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met World Athletics chief Sebastian Coe over the weekend for talks, with Zelensky invited to the Paris Olympics as Coe's personal guest if schedules allow. Coe committed to continue financially supporting Ukrainian athletes through a special fund set up by athletics, ensuring they can continue to train, qualify for events and participate. "It was important for me to be here this weekend at their national championships ahead of the Paris...

Extra border controls were reintroduced on June 7 on the occasion of the European Football Championship. Another 186 people were arrested at the border after they were found to be wanted on arrest warrants, according to authorities.
Kimmich: Germany have a lot of respect for Spain but no fear
Germany players are looking forward to the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Spain with a lot of respect, but no fear of their opponents, defender Joshua Kimmich said. "Spain have made the most stable impression so far, so it will be a tough one - for both sides," Kimmich told reporters on Monday. The hosts on Friday will face title favourites Spain, who are the only team so far with a perfect record at the tournament. Defender David Raum said that it's "a compliment" when people refer to the match-up in Stuttgart as an early final, but stressed: "I'm not cold sweating yet." "We're trying...
Inflation in Germany fell to 2.2% in June, preliminary data shows
Preliminary June inflation figures for Germany released on Monday showed inflation easing again, with prices 2.2% higher than the same month last year. That is a decline from the 2.4% figure for May, according to preliminary figures released by the Germany's Federal Statistical Office. Core inflation, which excludes volatile prices for food and energy, amounted to 2.9%. While services in particular became more expensive, energy became cheaper in June. Compared to May, prices rose by 0.1% in June, according to the preliminary figures. Economist Sebastian Dullien from the labour-affiliated Institute for Macroeconomics and Economic Research (IMK) said the slight bump in inflation in May was an outlier. "The downward trend in inflation is intact and has now reasserted itself in June. A further slight decline in inflation is expected in the coming months," he said. A recent survey of German companies about plans for pricing by the Munich-based ifo Institute also indicated that inflation is likely to continue declining. "The inflation rate will likely continue its slow decline and fall below the 2% mark in August for the first time since March 2021," said Timo Wollmershäuser, ifo's head of economic research.
Germany's Baerbock concerned with far-right surge in French election
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has expressed her concern about the strong performance of France's right-wing nationalist National Rally (RN) party in the first round of elections there. "It cannot leave anyone cold when (...) in our closest partner and best friend a party that sees Europe as the problem and not the solution is far ahead," Baerbock said on Monday, referring to the strong showing by Marine Le Pen's party in French snap elections on Sunday. She said that Germany and France - the two largest countries in the European Union - share a special responsibility for a Europe. "In a democracy, elections are of course in the hands of the voters," Baerbock said, adding that as Germany's foreign minister she has a particular responsibility not to interfere in domestic politics of another country. The RN and its allies took the lead in the first round of the early parliamentary elections, collecting 33% of the vote. The left-wing New Popular Front alliance is at almost 28%, while President Emmanuel Macron's centrist camp has just over 20%. Run-off elections, in which most of the seats in France's National Assembly will be decided, will take place next Sunday.
