"If more countries in West Africa descend into instability, that will not only have dramatic consequences for the local population, but also a direct impact on our security in Europe," the minister said ahead of her two-day visit to the region. Baerbock pointed to Senegal in particular as an important mediator in the region. Senegal and Ivory Coast, who are among...

WHO: Child vaccination rates below pre-pandemic levels
Global child vaccination rates remained below pre-pandemic levels last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported on Monday, raising concerns among experts. In 2023, 84% of children globally were fully vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis - or whooping cough -, a triple vaccination considered a key indicator of child vaccination rates. The figure represents a slight decrease compared to pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019, according to the report. The number of children without a single dose of the triple vaccination increased to 14.5 million last year, up from 12.8 million before the pandemic began, it...

Biden warns of political violence after attack on Trump
Following the attack on his Republican rival Donald Trump, US President Joe Biden has stressed "the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics," calling on the public to "remember, while we may disagree, we are not enemies." "In America, we resolve our difference at the ballot box, not with bullets," Biden said in an address to the nation from the White House on Sunday evening. The world's rarest whale is believed to have washed ashore on a New Zealand beach, the country's conservation authority said on Monday. The whale is so rare that since the 1800s, only six specimens have ever been known to science, the Department of Conservation (DOC) said. The 5-metre long whale, found on July 4 on a beach near Dunedin in the South Island, was believed to be a spade-toothed whale, DOC Coastal Otago operations manager Gabe Davies said. "Spade-toothed whales are one of the most poorly known large mammalian species of modern times," Davies said. "From a scientific and conservation point of view, this...

England captain Harry Kane has lamented a second lost Euro final, 2-1 against Spain, as a missed opportunity as his personal run without any silverware continued. "It's hard to put into words how we're all feeling right now. Tough game. We did well to get back into the game and struggled to build on that. To concede late on is really tough to take," he told ITV. "We've been coming from behind all tournament, we've got it in the locker. We didn't take the next step and win it. "In the first half, we struggled. We couldn't keep the ball. Second half was...

Spain complete glorious Euros with 2-1 win over England for the title
Spain lived up to their top billing as they defeated England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday to claim a record fourth continental title and extend England's 58-year big trophy drought by at least another two years. Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal slid into Marc Cucurella's low cross to fire the winner after their 47th-minute opener from Nico Williams was cancelled out by English sub Cole Palmer in the 73rd. Under the eyes of Spain King Felipe VI in Berlin's Olympic Stadium, Spain became the first team to win all seven matches at one Euros as they moved one ahead of Germany with a fourth Euro title, the previous ones coming in 1964, 2008 and 2012. Luis de la Fuente's team scored a finals record 15 goals in their run to the title that included victories over title holders Italy, 2018 and 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Croatia, hosts Germany and pre-tournament favourites France, the 2018 World Cup winners and 2022 runners-up. England showed plenty of resilience as they were the first team to come from behind in all three previous knock-out matches, but fell just short as in 2021 when they lost the Wembley final on penalties against the Azzurri.
Spain's Yamal now also the youngest player in a Euro final
Spain's Lamine Yamal added another age record to his name on Sunday when he became the youngest player to appear in a European Championship final, the day after his 17th birthday. Yamal is close to two years younger than Renato Sanches who played in the 2016 final for Portugal at 18 years 326 days. Yamal earlier became the youngest ever player at the Euros at 16 years 338 days in their opening match against Croatia and then also the youngest scorer at 16 years 362 days in the semi-final against France. He has played in all Euro 2024 matches and is also younger than the late Brazil great Pelé who played in the 1958 World Cup final at 17 years 249. Pelé was also older than Yamal in his first World Cup match and goal. The Pelé foundation has already congratulated Yamal to his achievements, expressing hope that "this is only the start of a promising journey." Yamal made his first team club debut at Barcelona as a 15-year-old, and last year became the youngest Spain player and scorer in a 7-1 victory against Georgia, at 16 years 57 days.
Zverev and Schröder part of German Olympic flag bearer shortlist
Germany has nominated three men and three women from which their flag bearers for the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics will be picked, with tennis player Alexander Zverev among several gold medallists from past Games. The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) announced the athletes on Sunday, with fans and Olympic team members to vote which woman and which man will carry the flag at the July 26 opening ceremony. Zverev, who won gold in 2021, and Dennis Schröder, captain of the basketball team that won a first-ever World Cup title for Germany said they would love the honour. The third man to chose from is Christian Weitz, who has a shooting gold from 2016 and set to compete in his fifth Games. On the women's side, 2016 football gold medallist Alexandra Popp was selected alongside twice 2021 dressage Olympic champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Anna-Maria Wagner, who won two judo bronze medals three years ago in Tokyo. The flag bearers will be announced on July 25, the day before the opening ceremony. The Paris Olympics will run until August 11.

Biden announces address to nation, calls for unity
US President Joe Biden says he will make a special address the nation later on Sunday and called for unity in the wake of the assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump. "We must unite as one nation to demonstrate who we are," Biden said at the White House, ahead of a planned address from the Oval Office later on Sunday.
