Two German police officers seriously injured in anti-AfD protests
Two police officers suffered serious head injuries as they escorted a politician through a throng of activists protesting against a congress held by the far-right Alternative for Germany in the western city of Essen. Unknown assailants kicked the officers in the head after forcing them to the ground, a police statement said. They were taken to hospital. Seven other officers suffered less serious injuries. The assailants were able to escape into the crowd. Activists and police clashed throughout the day. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser condemned the attacks. "We need strong democratic forces and peaceful protest against right-wing extremism and racism. Violence cannot be justified," she posted on X. She expressed her thanks and respect to the police and wished the injured officers a speedy recovery.
England will be 'unbeatable' if they click, says Slovakia coach
Slovakia coach Francesco Calzona fears England will finally get their act together in Sunday's Euro 2024 last-16 clash. Gareth Southgate's side came into the tournament as favourites but a dour group stage with just one win and two goals scored has dampened the mood among Three Lions fans. Calzona is staying wary though given the quality in England's squad. "When England do give great performances as a group, they will be unbeatable. We need to be very careful, they have one of the best squads here, they have physicality, technique," he told a news conference on Saturday. "They left some top-class players at home...
Zelensky welcomes release of prisoners including Tatar leader
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed the return of Ukrainian prisoners from Russia, including Nariman Dzhelyal, a leader of the Crimean Tatars. "Ten civilians, plus 90 soldiers were released this week," Zelensky said in a video message. This brought to 3,310 prisoners released to Ukraine from Russian prisons, he said. "We have to find all our people and return them to Ukraine, every one of them in prison or deported – adults and children, soldiers and civilians," he said. Dzhelyal was among the 10 civilians returned on Friday. Zelensky held brief talks with the Tatar leader on Saturday. They last met in 2021. Shortly after that meeting and before the Russian invasion of February 2022, Dzhelyal was arrested in Crimea, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. He was subsequently sentenced to 17 years in prison after being found guilty of blowing a gas pipeline. Among those released were two priests of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. No information has been released on whether Russian prisoners were released by the Ukrainians in return. The last prisoner exchange between Kiev and Moscow a few days ago included a metropolitan of the pro-Russian Ukrainian Orthodox Church, who received a decoration from Patriarch Kirill on his arrival in Moscow.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran, an opposition movement set up in 1981 and banned within the country, had called for the protest on Friday, when the first round of the elections...
'League of his own' - Verstappen gets Austria pole after sprint win
Max Verstappen maintained his 100% sprint race season record and then ended a three-race pole position drought in a "demonstration of power" at the Austrian Grand Prix home event of team owners Red Bull on Saturday. The triple world champion won the sprint from pole as he was able to counter a passing move from Lando Norris in lap five by retaking the lead in the next turn. Germany's Alexander Zverev has acknowledged he never previously believed he could win Wimbledon but the world number four thinks this year could finally be his year. The Olympic champion has yet to win a grand slam title, losing the French Open final to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets in June while also going the distance in the 2020 US Open final against Dominic Thiem. Now the 27-year-old says he is in top shape ahead of Monday's start and thinks the absence of Rafa Nadal, as well as Novak Djokovic not being fully fit, opens the door for a new champion at the...
Estonian climate minister chosen to succeed Kallas as prime minister
The Reform Party of Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas on Saturday nominated Climate Minister Kristen Michal to take over from Kallas if her appointment as European Union foreign policy chief goes through. The executive committee of the liberal-conservative party took the decision unanimously. Michal thanked the party for the confidence shown in him and pledged to fill the post with dignity. He stressed that Estonian national security would be a priority. The Kallas government has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine in fighting off the Russian invasion and backs a firm policy towards Moscow. Earlier this year, her name was added to the Russian Interior Ministry's list of those wanted on criminal charges. The Reform Party executive also decided to check the current coalition agreement, which draws in the Social Democratic Party (SDE) and the liberal Estonia 200 as junior partners. On Thursday, Kallas was selected as the next EU foreign and security policy head at a summit in Brussels. Confirmation depends on a vote in the new European Parliament. Kallas, the first woman to hold the post of prime minister in Estonia, plans to represent her country at the NATO summit being held in Washington between July 9 and 11 before resigning.

Ansah's time also qualifies him for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Verstappen storms to Austrian GP pole after sprint win
Max Verstappen returned to the Formula One pole position with a dominant performance at the Austrian Grand Prix, some three hours after winning the sprint race at the home race of team owners Red Bull. Verstappen clocked 1 minute 4.314 seconds on the 4.318-kilometre Red Bull Ring for a 40th career pole to hold off McLaren's Lando Norris and George Russell of Mercedes who was ranked third after Oscar Piastri's lap was scrapped due to a track limit violation. The triple world champion has eight poles for the season as he ended a three-race drought of not being first on the grid. Verstappen had earlier Saturday won the sprint race from Piastri and Norris in similarly commanding fashion. Verstappen has won seven of the 10 grands prix this season, and all three sprints, to top the championship 71 points ahead of Norris.

France's Mbappé given new mask for Belgium game, Coman on dad dash
France captain Kylian Mbappé, who broke his nose in the group stage, is testing out a new mask ahead of the Euro 2024 last-16 game with Belgium on Monday. The French Football Federation published photographs on Saturday from a closed training session the day before, where the striker was wearing a different shape of mask to the one he used in the 1-1 group-stage draw with Poland. The 25-year-old scored a penalty in that game but had previously complained about his mask being uncomfortable and affecting his vision. The new mask is larger but tighter to the face and French broadcaster RMC Sport said it had been chosen as it might not bother him as much in Monday's game in Dusseldorf. France players have yet to score a goal from open play at these Euros. Meanwhile, winger Kingsley Coman will temporarily leave the French team's base in western Germany for the birth of his fourth child, media reports said. The 28-year-old is travelling to Sweden to be with his girlfriend, RMC Sport and others reported. He is expected to be back for the Belgium clash.
Shnaider beats Vekic for Bad Homburg title
Russian youngster Diana Shnaider capped a great week of grass court tennis with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 triumph over Donna Vekic for the Bad Homburg Open title on Saturday. Shnaider reached the final over three-time grand slam champion Angelique Kerber, Australian Open semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska, former world number two Paula Badosa and third seed Emma Navarro. "It was an amazing week for me ... I managed to play one of the best weeks of my life, so I hope I will just keep going like this," Shnaider said, looking ahead at Monday's Wimbledon start and beyond. The WTA said that Shnaider will rise from 47th to 30th in the next world rankings.
Nati or Nazi? Berlin police aware that Swiss fans' song not fascist
German police have been given special training to spot the difference between Switzerland fans singing the word "Nati" rather than "Nazi" at Euro 2024. A Berlin police spokesperson confirmed to dpa that officers have explicitly been reminded that "Nati" to Switzerland fans is a shortened version of the German term Nationalmannschaft, meaning national team. Swiss German is radically different to the German spoken in the Euro host nation. The chants from Swiss fans, who swarmed Berlin for their last-16 match with Italy on Saturday, have been misconstrued as fascist salutes by bystanders in the past.

In all, Spain have won six of their seven meetings, with Georgia's lone success in a 2016 friendly. Asked about the 7-1, Frenchman Sagnol told reporters on Saturday that "I don't want to say much about it" - before elaborating after all. "Of course it was a difficult moment for...

Co-leaders of Germany's far-right AfD re-elected by party delegates
Members of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) have re-elected Tino Chrupalla and Alice Weidel to another term of joint party leadership. Both faced no opposition in their bid for another two-year term. Chrupalla received 82.72% of the vote, a significantly better result than at the last party conference two years ago, when he received only 53.4% from AfD delegates. "I'm really a bit overwhelmed," Chrupalla said after his election. A craftsman from the eastern state of Saxony, Chrupalla has been a co-chairman of the AfD since November 2019. Weidel's election result was slightly weaker than Chrupalla's: she received 79.77% of the vote, compared to the 67.3% two years ago when she was first elected to the party's leadership.
