Craig Austin, a former U.S. Army veteran, embarked on a dark journey after his mission on the battlefield in Ukraine. His troubled voyage this time around was not about a killing spree on the international battlefield but a double murder in Florida. This story shows Lang's life and actions, shedding light on his dangerous path.

A U.S. soldier turned foreign fighter appeared in court on Monday, June 4th, 2024, after being arrested and charged with a double murder in 2018 and for violating the Neutrality Act.

Ukraine and Kenya: the Begining of a Disturbed Ending

Craig Austin Lang met Alex Jared Zwiefelhofer in Ukraine in 2017. According to Zwiefelhofer, they were part of a volunteer battalion fighting Russian separatists at the time. This connection marked the beginning of their alliance in a crime. They both allegedly traveled to Kenya to continue their armed involvement mission. However, their war endeavors fell short when they were detained at the South Sudan border while trying to cross over. This led to their deportation, temporarily halting their international escapade.

Return to the United States and Defrauding Claims

On his way back to the United States, Lang falsely claimed to have been a military advisor and a soldier in the Ukraine Army since 2015. He told the customs and border protection officers that he intended to live with his mother in Arizona. Little did anyone know that Lang’s deceptive intent was part of a broader behavior that characterized his life post-military service.

The Florida Double Murder

In April 2018, Lang and Zwiefelhofer traveled to Florida in response to an online ad on “Armlist.” They set up a meeting with an elderly couple to sell firearms. It wasn’t until April 9 when the Lee County Sheriff’s Department received a report of “rapid gunfire” in Estero, Florida. The following day, the bodies of a man and a woman were discovered in the back of a pickup truck. They were those of the elderly couple who traveled from Brooksville, Florida, to buy the weapons from Lang and Zwiefelhofer.

The result of the Autopsy revealed that the couple had been brutally shot a total of 18 times, an end to a seemingly simple transaction.

Legal Consequences

As the two suspects, Craig Austin Lang and Alex Jared Zwiefelhofer, were apprehended, Lang was charged with multiple criminal indictments, including double homicide, armed robbery, false statements in a passport application, aggravated identity theft, and misuse of a passport.

Lang’s actions showed a startling disregard for human life,according to Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri. The legal system swiftly moved to hold him accountable for his heinous crimes.
