Timberlab Holdings , owner of Timberlab , has acquired the assets of American Laminators , an Oregon-based glue-laminatedtimber (glulam) manufacturer. Its facilities in Drain and Swisshome will continue to operate.

The acquisition will increase Timberlab’s capacity for producing high-quality, lower-cost glulam columns and beams for mass-timber projects, the firm’s president, Christopher Evans, stated in an email. Timberlab will now be able to source glulam with more price certainty and provide competitive packages to more projects across the U.S., he added.

American Laminators was founded in 1962. Its Drain and Swisshome locations have been operating for over 60 years, with Douglas fir, southern yellow pine, and Alaska yellow cedar accounting for an annual capacity of 20 million board feet.

Each facility will undergo various deferred maintenance and operational efficiency upgrades. That work will involve enhancing production equipment such as the dry kilns and planing mill at the Swisshome facility, Evans stated. At the Drain facility, Timberlab is analyzing potential plant upgrades to increase production.

American Laminators provides products to the North American market. The manufacturer has supplied landmark projects, including Autzen Stadium in Eugene, the LeMay America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, Washington, and the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California. Timberlab sourced glulam from American Laminators for the new 95,000-square-foot Multnomah County East County Library in Portland.

“Timberlab is reaching further back in the supply chain, adding to our ability to engineer, assist in design, detail, and virtually construct, fabricate and install,” Evans stated. “By adding glulam manufacturing, we are moving toward becoming a vertically integrated company.”
