HARRISBURG — A popular program that helps Pennsylvania homeowners with the cost of essential repairs did not receive more funding in this year’s state budget, despite overwhelming demand in many counties. Almost 18,200 homeowners who applied for help from the Whole-Home Repairs program were waitlisted because of a lack of available funding, according to a survey by the Department of Community and Economic Development this spring. “We’re very disappointed — more than disappointed,” said...

Review: YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN Makes for a Monster Hit at Pittsburgh CLO
If you're a musical theatre historian, you'll know that one of the ongoing plot threads of the past two decades has been "Mel Brooks tries to make Young Frankenstein work as a musical." The original Broadway production was basically The Producers 2, all elaborate sets, giant choruses, crazy production numbers and novelty props and costumes. But despite the songs being great and the jokes being solid, the Broadway version felt inert, overstuffed. Brooks and crew, including co-librettist Thomas Meehan, have gone back to the show over and over to revise and revive it, always getting ALMOST "there" but not quite. Friends, I am proud to say, I think the Pittsburgh CLO version is "there." Finally, Young Frankenstein feels like it should feel: not a splashy, expensive spectacle, but an almost vaudevillian fusion of musical comedy, sketch comedy and burlesque. It's the "champagne on a beer budget" tone that Brooks and Gene Wilder's divine mix of sophistication and stupidity demands.

In brief: National Night Out, high school reunion and more in the South Hills
Neighborhoods throughout Pleasant Hills are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 30th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. Residents are invited to join in the celebration with police, fire and medics by turning on their lights, locking their doors and coming outside to spend the evening with family members and neighbors. Residents are encouraged to host block parties, cookouts and youth activities. This is a great time for all age groups to get to know each other and build relationships. Emergency equipment from numerous public safety organizations will form a procession and travel throughout the borough, visiting neighborhoods. Groups or organizations from the area that wish to participate in the procession with their motorized units are invited to join public safety personnel in making this year’s event even bigger than those held in the past.
