Enforcing Texas’ new immigration law may be difficult
Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland has 54 miles of U.S.-Mexico border in the West Texas jurisdiction he patrols, and five deputies. Cleveland said he “fully” supports Texas’ new immigration law that will let authorities like him arrest people suspected of illegally entering the state from another country. He also appreciates Operation Lone Star, the state’s border security initiative that has given him funds to hire two deputies and buy equipment and vehicles. But Cleveland, who served as a Border Patrol agent for 26 years before becoming sheriff of the county where he grew up, must also contemplate reality. His jail can...

Food bank, pet resource center to host food distribution
Hays County Food Bank has outgrown its current facility, said HCFB Executive Director Eleanor Owen. “It’s difficult to serve all of Hays County, and [running] a facility of this size takes a lot of manual labor and a lot of turnaround,” Owen told the Daily Record. “We’re not able to capitalize on maybe a larger donation or lower priced foods and things that we might be able to get from different vendors because we don’t have a loading dock. We’re just not set up to serve the size that our community is.” Owen, along with Board President Jamie Lee Chase and board...

Even after the recent expansion of the Hays County Jail, inmates are still outsourced to other counties due to overcrowding. It is an issue that has been ongoing for years, and Hays County has been working to reduce those numbers, as well as the associated expenditures that go with it. There is a relatively new department dedicated to doing just that. The Hays County Commissioners Court received a presentation on the status of the Judicial Services Department in the county at the regularly scheduled meeting last week. Hays County Assistant Judicial Services Director Albert Sierra discussed the progress of the Judicial Services...

Plan now for the solar eclipse
Celestially, the April 8 total solar eclipse promises to be a far more impressive event than the annular eclipse the Texas Hill Country experienced in October. Logistically, however, getting to see the April 8 eclipse in all of its glory might prove to be a bit more challenging. The April 8 eclipse occurs at 1:36 p.m. on a Monday. This is good news for those who live within the path of totality (including Dripping Springs ana Wimberley). Everyone who lives in that narrow band can simply step outside, pop on their certified eclipse glasses and enjoy. How much different will the total...

Can Aqua Texas supply enough water without overpumping?
“Aqua is a utility regulated by the Public Utility Commission.
