Second food distribution planned for people, pets
The Central Texas Food Bank and Hays County Pet Resource Center will host a drive-up food distribution for people and pets on Saturday, May 25, from 9:30 -11 a.m. at McCormick Middle School in Buda. The event is open to anyone in Hays County and pets do not need to be present to receive pet food. Pet food for cats and dogs will be provided in addition to the normal food distribution. Hail, high winds cause damage across the county
, It was a typical hot and humid afternoon with clear skies at 7:35 p.m. Thursday when phones across town began buzzing with an emergency alert from the National Weather Service that stated “Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for this area until 8:30 .m. for destructive aseball size hail. Take shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows. People and animals outdoors will be severely injured.” Within ten minutes, the violent storm tore through the city. , Over the weekend, people across the contiguous United States were gifted with an unusual view: the Northern Lights. Even as far south as Texas, Dripping Springs area residents could make out faint pinks in the night sky on Friday, May caught the view better than the naked eye. This rare phenomenon was caused by 10 — though cameras solar storm activity.
DSHS students claim runner-up titles in state speech contest
Dripping Springs High School freshman Anvika Jain and sophomore Elijah Slater each captured second-place finishes in their respective grade levels at the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation School Bus Safety Speech Contest. This year’s contest took place on Monday, April 22 in Waco. The annual TAPT contest provides an opportunity for high school students to prepare and present an original oration to convey the given school bus safety topic for the year. The 2024 topic was “Driving Safely into the Future.” Jain and Slater both advanced to the state competition after placing first in the Region 13 contest earlier this spring.

There was outpouring of support during the April 25 vigil for Malachi Williams — the man involved in a San Marcos Police foot chase that ended in a gunshot, which took his life, on April 11. County to host open house for new park
As a part of the 2020 Parks and Open Spaces Bond Package, Hays County is developing a plan for the future design of Cape’s Pond Park. The open house on May 16 will be in-person from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dunbar Recreation Center for participants to come and go as they please. Materials shared at the open house will be available online and a survey will be available for participants to provide their feedback. El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association will be displaying El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail: Its History, People and Places traveling exhibit for viewing from April 22 through June 7, 2024, in the Historic Hays County Courthouse. DarkSky Texas announces the new Better Outdoor Lighting Design Initiative intended to reach more Texans about ways to improve outdoor lighting to benefit ourselves, the economy, and nature. “DarkSky Texas represents the recognized global authority on better lighting to reduce light pollution,” said Cindy Luongo Cassidy, DarkSky Texas president. “Reducing the negative impact of man-made light at night benefits human health and wildlife. Real estate professionals support Helping Hands
, Members of the Dripping Springs Elite Real Estate Professionals recently gathered at HEB in Dripping Springs to load 836 pounds of food and deliver it to Helping Hands Food Pantry. They worked to sort, label and organize the donation in the correct place at the food pantry with the help of Deborah Cluchey, pantry coordinator. Cluchey provided a pantry tour and instructed the group on the process for receiving donations and stocking. Dripping Springs Lacrosse advanced to the State Semifinals for the first time ever by winning their Super Regional playoff games against Kingwood and Pearland last weekend. Low water levels close Jacob’s Well for a second summer
The Hays County Parks Department announced that Jacob’s Well Natural Area is suspending its 2024 summer swimming season until further notice. The summer swimming season, which typically extends from May 1 through Sept. 30 of each year, will be suspended due to belowaverage spring flow and water levels. Hays County officials plan to re-evaluate water conditions monthly to determine whether swimming might become possible at a later date. Swimming has been suspended at Jacob’s Well Natural Area since June 2022, when recorded spring flow dropped below average. An Amber Alert issued for a three-yearold San Marcos child ended with the child unharmed and safely recovered by authorities over the weekend. An Amber Alert is a child message distributed by the child abduction alert system, which most commonly results in messages being sent to cell phones, that asks the public for help finding an abducted child. According to the San Marcos Police Department, Legend Torres was allegedly abducted from Children’s Park at 1:30 p.m. on April 27. HCWC receives final payment of $644,000 grant from Hays County commissioners
Hays - Caldwe l l Women’s Center recently accepted the second half and final payment of the $644,000 grant unanimously approved by the Hays County Commissioners Court in August of 2022. This grant, funded through the Hays County allocation of the American Rescue Plan and the Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, proved critical financial relief to HCWC in order to mitigate and recover from the extraordinary expenses and revenue loss resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and to cover a much-needed expansion to the McCoy Family Emergency Shelter.
