Former Ohio State player Jon Ewert to succeed Andy Asmo as Jerome boys lacrosse coach

After being a part of state championship teams in 2021 and 2023 and a state runner-up in 2022, Jon Ewert has been tasked with keeping the run going for the Dublin Jerome boys lacrosse program.

Pending school board approval, Ewert will succeed Andy Asmo, who stepped down as coach after seven seasons .

Ewert, 60, has been the Celtics’ offensive coordinator since 2019, so he doesn’t envision the program taking a step back after Asmo went 123-28 in seven seasons.

“(The transition is) going to be pretty seamless,” Ewert said. “It’s no different, especially when you’ve done it for as long as I have. We’ll just continue moving forward. I don’t think the kids will notice a lot of change.”

Ewert, a 1986 Ohio State graduate from East Syracuse, New York, is ninth on the Buckeyes men’s lacrosse all-time scoring list with 165 points on 86 goals and 79 assists.

Before joining Jerome, Ewert was an assistant coach at Columbus Academy for two seasons before taking over the program for the 2017 season. He previously coached at Worthington Kilbourne and Dublin Coffman, helping to guide Kilbourne to the Division I state title in 2009 .

His son, Shawn, is a 2014 graduate of Jerome.

"I've probably seen more Dublin Jerome lacrosse games since its inception in 2004 than anyone with the first team ... being mostly comprised of a lot of my kids from Coffman," Ewert said. "I was very invested in that group when they started. I coached a lot of the kids around my son's age through youth lacrosse and then being an assistant (at Jerome since 2019)."

Ewert also has been a coach for Resolute Lacrosse since 2013.

“Jon is a perfect fit to lead the Jerome program into the future,” Jerome athletic director Jay Schwanke said. “Being on staff for the past five years, he was a huge contributor to our state championship teams in 2021 and 2023. Between his coaching skill and experience, relationships he has built with players and parents and being a great role model, I am confident he will continue the rich tradition of the program.”

Asmo helped the Celtics reach at least a regional final every year since 2019. This spring, Jerome lost 15-10 to eventual state champion Olentangy Liberty in the Region 1 final .

“Jon is a great lacrosse mind who gets the most out of our players,” Asmo said. “I look forward to seeing how Jon continues to take Jerome to even greater heights in the years to come.”
