Drought returns to Utah, but storms forecast to continue in state's driest region
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's droughtless streak didn't last very long, but the section now in drought could get some much-needed rain over the next few days. About 5% of the state — almost entirely in Tooele County — is back in moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor's weekly report released on Thursday. It comes three weeks after the Beehive State was drought-free for the first time since 2019 as it cleared out in eastern Utah.
Utah Supreme Court overturns death sentence for man convicted of murder in rape cover-up
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah’s Supreme Court overturned a death sentence Thursday for a man convicted of murdering a woman to stop her from testifying against him in a rape case. Justices said Douglas Lovell had ineffective attorneys at his sentencing hearing, but upheld his conviction and sent the case back to a lower court for resentencing. The Utah Attorney General’s Office — the prosecutors in the case — did not have an immediate answer Thursday as to whether Lovell could again receive a death sentence, spokesperson Alex Curcio said. Lovell, 66, has twice been convicted of capital murder...

Coalville-area wildfire human-caused, fire crews slow spread
The Dikker Hill fire had grown to 361 acres Thursday afternoon. It’s burning halfway between Coalville and Henefer, about 5 miles from each. Northern Utah Type 3 incident management team spokesperson Brian Trick says firefighting efforts combined with lower temperatures and higher humidity overnight helped crews gain ground. “We...
West Jordan firefighters using new heavy, specialized blanket to fight EV fires
WEST JORDAN— West Jordan firefighters trained Tuesday morning on how to fight an EV battery fire. And fight not with water, but with a specialized blanket. EV fires, or electrical vehicle fires, while not as common, are more tricky to put out than the average gas car fire. This is because the battery is designed to protect the inside from the elements.
