Engage Toledo hosts inaugural Neighborhood Discussion webinar
Questions about potholes, timeliness of request responses, and issues with out-of-state landlords and investors were some of the inquiries broached at Engage Toledo’s inaugural Neighborhood Discussion webinar Tuesday. About 25 registrants listened in to find out how various city departments are working to benefit neighborhoods and were then invited to ask questions and share suggestions. “We are the front line to the city," said Jennifer Jaqua, the program’s commissioner. “We may be the first and only time you interact with the city, so it's a lot of information that our team needs to know, but we do it, and we do it with great pride.” Moderated by neighborhood navigator, LuCynthia Jones, the webinar marked the start of a quarterly series aimed at keeping residents informed and engaged, organizers said.

Toledo police report crime down, recruitment up
Crime in Toledo is down in all categories so far this year, according to Police Chief Mike Troendle, who gave a police department report before the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform committee on Tuesday. “As of this morning, every category that we track is down,” Chief Troendle said. “We are seeing a 13 percent reduction in auto theft, 5 percent reduction in burglary, 4 percent reduction in homicide, a 5 percent reduction in robbery, a 17 percent reduction in shooting incidents, and 29 percent reduction in theft of motor vehicles. We’re also seeing a 4 percent reduction in persons shot.” All of the department’s crime reduction strategies appear to be working, he said, including two foot-patrol areas in the city. “Those are wildly popular and effective ways for us to not only reduce crime but connect to communities and have officers on the streets every single day,” the chief said. “Every month, we choose a different area to expand our foot patrol, bike patrol, and crime reduction strategies.”

Work on downtown building's facade reveals ties to country music song
Workers removing portions of the facade of the Burt’s Theater building downtown Tuesday morning uncovered signage that promoted one of the building’s famous former tenants: the Country Palace. The Country Palace was the second bar and live music venue Toledo businessman Duane Abbajay operated in the building, his first being the Peppermint Club. However, it was the first venture that helped inspire a hit country music song. According to A Bar In Toledo: The Untold Story of a Mafia Front Man and a Grammy-Winning Song, written by Dominic Vaiana and Mr. Abbajay’s daughter, Stephanie Abbajay, the elder Abbajay opened the Country Palace in the 1970s. Considered Toledo’s first Urban Cowboy-style honkytonk, it was in the Country Palace, one day in 1974, that Nashville songwriter Hal Bynum found himself watching a domestic tiff develop between a husband and wife. Mr. Bynum wrote about the encounter “at a bar in Toledo” in his song “Lucille,” which Kenny Rogers took to the top of the charts in 1977.
