Rep. Sharice Davids Highlights Kansas Trap Shooter Derrick Mein’s Journey Ahead of 2024 Paris Olympics
On the eve of the 2024 Paris Olympic opening ceremony, Representative Sharice Davids released a video of her conversation with Derrick Mein, Kansas’ sole athlete in the 2024 Games. Mein, from Paola, KS, will compete in trap shooting. This is his second Olympic appearance, following his gold medal win at the 2022 Shotgun World Championship in Osijek, Croatia.

"One" now available as audiobook
“One,” the debut novel from Cottonwood Falls author John C. Queen, is now available as an audiobook. Queen recently completed an audiobook version of his novel, “One,” with the help of local editor Rosalie Krenger. The audiobook, which is available through Audible, comes in at slightly over eight and a half hours and is completely voiced by Queen himself.
Emporia Pavilions welcoming new businesses, signaling local retail growth
The Emporia Pavilions are on the verge of welcoming new businesses, signaling significant growth for the local retail scene. Special Projects Coordinator and interim RDA Director Jim Witt confirmed that Five Below is on track for a late August opening. Old Navy and Ulta will be joining them later this year.
Emporia Area Retired School Personnel Activities
As August approaches, teachers and staff will be headed back to the area schools. We wish for everyone to have a great school year. Some former staff members are going to be experiencing retirement for the first time. Emporia Area Retired School Personnel invite you retirees to become a part of our group. We promote educational, social, health, professional and economic issues in our area. We also encourage volunteerism through personal contributions and community service group activities. It is a great group for fellowship and friendship. We meet the second Friday of every month in the large meeting room at the Emporia Recreation Center at 11:45. All retirees (not just the ones from this year) are invited to attend. We have a meal, a program, and a short business meeting. Recent retirees will be receiving a personal letter of invitation soon.

Madison’s Boomtown Cafe to close, future of Harry C’s Gasoline Alley to be evaluated
One eatery in downtown Madison is closing its doors, and the long-term future of another is unclear. Boomtown Cafe will close after lunch Aug. 2 after 14 months of operation. In a social media post, the restaurant says “we simply are not generating enough sales to support continued operations.” Owners are encouraging people who may be interested in taking over the Boomtown operations to reach out and discuss plans.

Maj. Gen. Monte Rone told a Military Affairs Council Breakfast audience in Junction City this week that Fort Riley can't be a secret.
