Soccer Finishes Busy Three Day Stretch with Wins on Saturday
The Pierre Governor soccer teams would come away with two wins over the weekend in Rapid City as the boys would go 1-0-1 and the girls finished at 1-1. On Friday night, the Governor girls would drop the first game of the weekend with a 3-1 loss to the Raiders. Stevens would get two goals in the first half before going 1-1 in the second half with the Governors to hold on to improve to 5-0 on the season. It was the first loss of the season for the Governor girls team who had been solid defensively through the first three games of the year. Then on Saturday, the Governor girls would pick a 3-1 win to improve the record to 4-1 as the Governors would control the game throughout scoring early on in the first half and adding on from there.
Huset’s High Bank Nationals continue
BRANDON, S.D. (KELO) — After being postponed a while due to weather, Huset’s High Bank Nationals began Friday. In the Nordstrom’s Late Model Street Stocks, it’d be Mike Chaney pulling ahead of Zach Olivier for first from the two spot in lap one. Chaney would claim his first career Huset’s victory.
Governors Hang on for Week One Win over Aberdeen Central
The Pierre Governor football team would get a week one win, hanging on to a 20-14 score over the Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles on Saturday on the road. Aberdeen Central would get on the board first with a 15 yard touchdown throw from Brenner Waldrop to Colby Dauwen late in the first quarter. But after two empty possessions for the Governors offensively, Pierre would score three straight touchdowns starting with a one yard touchdown run by Trevor Rounds, a 17 yard touchdown catch from Cooper Terwilliger from Kaleb Lounsbury and a two yard touchdown run from George Stalley on the final play of the first half to lead 20-7. Pierre was held off the scoreboard in the second half and a late touchdown from Dauwen of eight yards out to pull within six, but the Governors recovered the onside kick and had to kneel downs to run out the clock.

Governors Drop Friday Home Match Against Stevens
The Pierre Governor volleyball team would be swept by the Stevens Raiders on Friday night with scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-21. Two Stevens Raiders had double digit kills as Avery Kraus had 12 to lead all hitters and Sydney Wathen finished with 11. Overall Stevens had 35 kills in the three set win while the Governors could only get 14 which included five from Campbell Cronin to lead the Governors. Stevens had 21 hitting errors and nine service errors in the three sets, but Pierre was unable to take advantage of the miscues. Savannah Fullerton had two aces for Pierre who led in each set, but have not won a set in its first two matches.

Chargers Use Balance of Ground and Air Attack, Knock off Burke
Homecoming night went the Sully Buttes Chargers way, as they ran and passed their way through the Burke Cougars to a 56-6 victory Friday in Onida. Sully Buttes finished with 262 yards rushing, and 239 yards passing to amass 501 yards total offense to earn their second victory of the season. Last weeks’ rushing champ Gavin Barber only had four rushes for 28 yards before he left in the second quarter with an injury, while junior Kadyn Westergren picked up the slack, rushing for 159 yards on 15 carries. Junior quarterback Wesley Wittler found his rhythm through the air, going 12 of 18 for 237 yards. Wittler opened the game with a 30 yard TD run, and scoring passes to four different receivers. Wittler also scored on a 20 yard run, that covered approximately 80 scrambling yards for his second rushing TD of the night. The junior also had two interceptions to help the cause.
