    2-year-old girl shot with her mother in Durham dies from her injuries

    A 2-year-old girl who was one of three people shot at a Durham apartment complex last week has died from her injuries, police said Friday.

    A man, young woman and the toddler were shot around 8 p.m. June 20 on East Cornwallis Road.

    The woman is the girl’s 19-year-old mother, and the pair were visiting the teen’s boyfriend at Campus Crossings at Durham Apartments when someone fired into their car, according to ABC11 , The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.

    The 2-year-old was one of three children age 5 or younger shot in Durham this year, and the second in June.

    A 3-year-old boy and an adult were both injured in a drive-by shooting June 10. In March, a 5-year-old girl and teenager were both shot in a drive-by shooting.

    The News & Observer asked police for an update on the 3-year-old boy’s condition but did not receive a reply late Friday afternoon.

    As of June 22, a total of 127 people had been shot this year in Durham, 20 of them fatally, according to police. Twenty of those shot were 17 or younger.

    In all of 2023, there were 210 people shot in Durham, with 42 reported as fatal. Just one person 5 or younger was shot last year, according to police.

    Police have announced no arrests or suspect information in the shooting that killed the 2-year-old girl
