Carrie Everett, a vibrant and determined North Carolina Central University student, is set to represent North Carolina at the upcoming Miss America Pageant.

The rising sophomore, whose eyes sparkled with joy and surprise at the news, is not only living her dream but also paving the way for others to follow.

“I was so shocked, and you could tell it on my face,” said Everett, reflecting on the moment she learned she would compete on the national stage.

Her journey is a testament to resilience and community support, having signed up for the pageant with only $40 in her pocket.

“You have to pay for gowns and miscellaneous purchases, but my community surrounded me and backed me,” she shared.

Everett’s platform, “We Need Equity to Build Communities,” aims to recruit more girls from diverse backgrounds into the pageant world. She is advocating for funding to make wardrobe classes and other resources more accessible.

“We are advocating for recruiting more girls from different backgrounds into this organization. I am advocating for wardrobe classes funding for accessibility in this organization,” said Everett.

Her message to aspiring contestants is clear and empowering:

“Regardless of what you have in your pocket, you belong here, and your presence is necessary; therefore, I say ‘come on, and let’s do this’.”

In addition to the honor of representing her state, Everett has won a car to travel North Carolina over the next year and an additional $3,500 for her achievements in preliminary talent, evening gown, vocal talent, and the rookie scholarship.

She is the fourth African American female to be crowned Miss North Carolina in the pageant’s 87-year history.

Everett’s journey is not just about winning a title; it’s about inspiring others to compete despite obstacles.
