The Disappearing Bricks of Abilene: A Stroll Down Memory Lane. When I first moved to Abilene in the early 1970s, I was struck by something I hadn’t seen before: streets paved with solid red bricks. To me, these streets stood out as symbols of prestige, a marker of higher-class neighborhoods or perhaps a nod to the city's rich heritage. Yet, as quickly as I fell in love with them, these brick streets began to disappear, covered up with black tar, as if being erased from the city’s memory.
West Nile virus detected: City to spray for mosquitos Thursday night

Labor Day activities across the Big Country
In case you aren't sure how to spend your Labor Day weekend, here are a few activities happening around the Big Country. The 39th Annual Big Country AA Conference is happening August 30-September 1 at201 Mesquite St. Event Center in Abilene. It's a three day event featuring stories of recovery from alcoholism. The event is open to the public and admission is $25. Registration for the event opens at 4 p.m. Friday.

Have your art displayed at The Abilene Public Library
October is National Arts and Humanities month, so what better way to celebrate than to have our own patron art exhibit? Come to the South Branch library in September and pick up an art “kit” which will include a 3″ x 3″ canvas and miniature paint kit with brush. (You do not have to use the included paint kit – you can use whatever medium you prefer.) After creating your masterpiece, return it to the library by October 1st to be included in the exhibit. Your creation will be displayed for the entire month of October.
