The rejuvenation of a once aging housing complex brings hope to many, while setting the tone for a brighter future in rural communities

In a commendable move that underscores the importance of affordable housing in every community, Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced the completion of the rehabilitation of Silver Lake Meadows in a press release from her office. This 52-unit affordable housing development in the Wyoming County village of Perry has now become a beacon of hope for many.

Governor Hochul expressed her commitment to addressing the state's housing shortage, emphasizing the importance of preserving existing housing stocks. "In order to address our state’s housing shortage, it is essential that we protect and preserve our existing supply of affordable homes across all of our communities,” she stated. “Our investment in Silver Lake Meadows will ensure this development remains accessible and affordable for the Wyoming County community for decades to come."

This project isn't just about the bricks and mortar. It's about the people who will call Silver Lake Meadows home, the families that will thrive here, and the community that will continue to grow. This is especially significant considering the state's growing workforce, a point Governor Hochul was keen to highlight.

The renovation of Silver Lake Meadows is a testament to these ongoing efforts, and it complements Governor Hochul's ambitious $25 billion comprehensive Housing Plan.

The rehabilitation process wasn't merely cosmetic. It included kitchen upgrades, the creation of a community recreation area, installation of new gutters, windows, siding, and lampposts with LED lighting, roof replacement, electric vehicle charging stations, and sidewalk replacement.

These improvements have not only enhanced the quality of life for residents but also aligned with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority Multifamily Performance Program's goal to reduce overall utility use by 22 percent.

Moreover, the location of Silver Lake Meadows is ideal for its residents. With daily public bus stops on weekdays, multiple grocers within one mile, and proximity to Silver Lake public beach and Letchworth State Park, the development offers more than just a home - it provides a lifestyle.

Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas praised the project, saying, “Our investment in the 45-year-old Silver Lake Meadows development ensures that these homes will remain a safe and comfortable place to live and importantly provides an affordable housing option for over 50 families in Wyoming County for years to come."

The completion of this rehabilitation project is a significant step forward in preserving and expanding housing opportunities for New Yorkers in every community. It serves as a reminder that everyone deserves access to affordable, quality housing, and it is up to us as a community to ensure this becomes a reality for all.
