A creature of fear and fascination lurks in the woods of New York State: the Fisher Cat. The Fisher Cat is not actually any kind cat, but a member of the weasel family, known for their stealth and predatory abilities.

Originating from North America, the Fisher Cat is slim with dark brown fur and has a bushy tail in the wild. With a face that's equal parts bear and weasel, this elusive predator has long, sharp claws that are adapted for climbing trees and capturing prey.

Feeding primarily on small mammals such as rabbits, squirrels and mice, the Fisher Cat hunts also occasionally birds, and insects along with fruits, nuts, and berries. It makes strange screeches and haunting calls through the forests to alert those nearby.

The Fisher Cat is a small predator but agile and fearless. It is not uncommon for Fisher Cats to kill prey much larger than themselves.

There are few encounters with Fisher Cats as they prefer to remain concealed in trees and dense vegetation. But in case you do come across one, be calm and slowly back away without turning your back on the animal. Fisher Cats are territorial and may attack if they feel threatened.

Experts do not recommend approaching or trying to interact with Fisher Cats because they are wild animals with sharp teeth and claws. Best to appreciate these intriguing animals from a distance and let them do their business in the wild.
