Tails of the Unexpected: The Legality of Squirrel Companions in New York State

Exploring the fine line between furry friends and wildlife regulations for keeping them as pets in the Empire State

In a world where exotic animals and furry companions are ever more popular, the issue of keeping a squirrel as a pet in New York State has stirred confusion and curiosity among animal lovers. While many people want a touch of nature in their homes, the laws regarding ownership of the bushy-tailed creatures is disputed.

Squirrels (the native grey and fox variety) are wildlife in New York State and are protected by law despite their endearing antics and cute appearances. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) regulates possession of wildlife including squirrels to protect the animals and public.

Under New York State law, having a squirrel as a pet is unlawful with no licenses and permits. Squirrels are game animals and owning one without authorization is a violation with fines and legal consequences.

The DEC sets forth specific guidelines for obtaining a permit to legally possess a squirrel in New York State. These permits are generally only given to wildlife rehabilitators, educational institutions or anybody with a reason behind taking care of a squirrel. The process of obtaining such a permit requires showing knowledge of squirrel care, proper housing and nutrition, and compliance with DEC regulations.

Although having a squirrel as a pet is charming, people should understand and respect the laws that protect these wild animals. Squirrels are included in the environment and must be permitted to live within their natural habitats when feasible.

For all those interested in squirrels and wish to interact legally with them, there are other ways to appreciate them. Set up squirrel feeders in your yard, volunteer at wildlife rehabilitation centers, or observe squirrels in the wild - all without owning the item.

Additionally, the DEC promotes responsible pet ownership and thinks about the health of any animal before allowing it into the house. Squirrels with their high energy and ability to climb and explore would probably not do well in a domestic environment and may experience stress or health problems if not provided with the right environment.
