    When Truman enjoyed the USS Missouri Buttermilk Pie, he was so impressed that he requested the recipe. However, the chief steward initially refused to share it. It wasn't until the steward retired in 1970 that he decided to reveal the cherished recipe, allowing others to enjoy this delicious treat that had once delighted a president.

    USS Missouri Buttermilk Pie  

    Ingredients:  

    • - 2 cups sugar  
    • - ½ cup butter, softened  
    • - 3 eggs  
    • - 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour  
    • - ¼ teaspoon salt  
    • - 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk*  
    • - 1 recipe Pastry for Single-Crust Pie  
    • - ½ cup chopped pecans, toasted** 

    Directions:  

    1. In a large bowl, gradually beat sugar into softened butter with an electric mixer, blending until well combined.  

    2. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.  

    3. Combine flour and salt, then gradually mix into the butter mixture.  

    4. Beat in buttermilk until smooth, then pour into the pastry crust.  

    5. Sprinkle toasted pecans over the filling.  

    6. Bake in a preheated 300°F (150°C) oven for 1 hour and 15 to 20 minutes, or until the filling is set.  

    7. Cool the pie and store it in the refrigerator. Makes 8 servings.
