It’s road work season in Eagle County. Here’s where you can expect traffic delays
There’s an old truism that the mountains have two seasons: winter and construction. That’s particularly true this year, with projects from end to end of the Vail Valley. Here’s a look at the road work going on this summer and fall. Vail Pass. Vail Pass could be...
Eagle River Coalition: Let’s move Beyond Lawn
Did you know that turf grass is considered the largest irrigated crop in the United States? Perhaps even more astoundingly, the amount of water used annually in America to irrigate grass could fill both Lake Powell and Lake Mead. We’re in the midst of a water crisis here in the...
Eagle County voters likely to pick the next District 2 commissioner in Tuesday’s primary election
This year’s primary election for state and local offices doesn’t have a lot of interest, but it could determine the next District 2 member of the Eagle County Board of Commissioners. That district serves roughly the middle part of the Eagle River Valley. Two Democrats — Tom Boyd...
Eagle County inmate to appeal felony conviction, challenge process which left him in jail awaiting sentencing for ‘unreasonably lengthy’ time
After being convicted of felony assault on a peace officer, Eagle County inmate Mark Goodban waited in the Eagle County Detention Center for 11 months to receive sentencing, something the judge called “unreasonably lengthy.”. Goodban is now seeking to have that case overturned, and also intends to have another...
Climate Action Collaborative: Eagle County commissioner candidates on climate
If the copious number of campaign yard signs and the ballot in your PO box didn’t alert you, let me remind you that the Eagle County primary election is on Tuesday, June 25. This year, several candidates are running for county commissioner seats in District 1 and District 2.
Community Water Plan poses solutions for protecting Eagle River water quality and quantity
The Eagle River Coalition recently released the Eagle River Community Water Plan, the first of its kind. The plan analyzes past, present and expected future conditions of the Eagle River, throughout Eagle County, as well as Gore Creek, Brush Creek and Gypsum Creek, to outline opportunities for improvement as external factors affect the river.
Letter: Tom Boyd truly loves Eagle County
I checked out the website of both primary candidates for Eagle County commissioner, Tom Boyd and Sarah Smith Hymes. Now, without casting any aspersions (what is an aspersion, anyway). Blah, Blah, Blah. Platitudes. But what else are they going to say? Who in Eagle County is not for the environment?...
Colorado resort communities want more focus on residents, less emphasis on tourism, survey shows
The slow and steady cultural and economic shifts underway in mountain communities were amplified coming out of the pandemic as new residents arrived, tourists flocked, real estate prices soared and local workers scrambled for housing. A new survey of 4,000 people in Eagle, Grand, Pitkin, Routt and Summit counties quantifies...

Letter: Marisol Rodriguez is the clear choice for Colorado State Board of Education
As a former Eagle County School District Director and longtime education leader in our state, I know that public board service requires a special kind of commitment. Boards guide organizations and institutions and play a major role in setting their strategic direction. For a board to do this effectively, it must consist of members who come from diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

Avon Council considering new revenues for Community Housing
The lack of affordable housing is a crisis in Avon and Eagle County. The Avon Town Council’s top priority is to support the development of affordable workforce housing. It is well recognized that an effective Community Housing strategy requires both the construction of new Community Housing and the acquisition of Community Housing deed restrictions on existing housing stock. Land values and construction costs have increased dramatically over the last several years which has significantly increased the cost of developing and acquiring affordable housing. Avon has adopted a 2% Short Term Rental Tax for Community Housing and now allocates 10% of the Town’s Real Estate Transfer Tax to Community Housing, which generates approximately $1.5M per year. Avon also formed a Downtown Development Authority which will dedicate 50% of its revenues to Community Housing. Even with these revenue sources, additional revenues are needed to meet Avon’s Community Housing needs.
Kathy Chandler-Henry will never give up the fight for Eagle County water as Colorado crisis comes to a boil
The unquestioned queen of water policy in the Eagle River Valley the last dozen years or so, retiring Eagle County Commissioner Kathy Chandler-Henry now knows the form her state barge will take as she metaphorically sails into the sunset, Cleopatra-style on the Nile of life. “We’re newly-minted paddleboarders and love...
