Avon Council considering new revenues for Community Housing
The lack of affordable housing is a crisis in Avon and Eagle County. The Avon Town Council’s top priority is to support the development of affordable workforce housing. It is well recognized that an effective Community Housing strategy requires both the construction of new Community Housing and the acquisition of Community Housing deed restrictions on existing housing stock. Land values and construction costs have increased dramatically over the last several years which has significantly increased the cost of developing and acquiring affordable housing. Avon has adopted a 2% Short Term Rental Tax for Community Housing and now allocates 10% of the Town’s Real Estate Transfer Tax to Community Housing, which generates approximately $1.5M per year. Avon also formed a Downtown Development Authority which will dedicate 50% of its revenues to Community Housing. Even with these revenue sources, additional revenues are needed to meet Avon’s Community Housing needs.
Kathy Chandler-Henry will never give up the fight for Eagle County water as Colorado crisis comes to a boil
The unquestioned queen of water policy in the Eagle River Valley the last dozen years or so, retiring Eagle County Commissioner Kathy Chandler-Henry now knows the form her state barge will take as she metaphorically sails into the sunset, Cleopatra-style on the Nile of life. “We’re newly-minted paddleboarders and love...

Letter: Sarah Smith Hymes listens and learns to find solutions
I am writing this letter to show my support for Sarah Smith Hymes for Eagle County commissioner in District 2. I have known Sarah for the past 30 years and I’m not sure I have ever met anyone who works as hard as she does. Her range of talents is quite extensive.
Despite clear instructions, some unaffiliated voters are still returning two ballots, not one
More than half of Eagle County’s voters aren’t affiliated with a political party. A small portion of those people have a hard time with instructions. Unaffiliated voters receive two ballots for primary elections, one for Democrats, one for Republicans. Voters can send back only one of those ballots or neither one will count. There’s no way to correct that mistake.
The Eagle Valley Humane Society is celebrating 50 years of service to four-legged friends
Like so many good ideas, the Eagle Valley Humane Society started with a chance meeting. Blondie Vucich, the group’s director in the 1980s, recalled that the group began with a chance 1971 meeting between Joanne Swift and Inga Prime in the parking lot of Vail’s old Crossroads shopping center. Both women loved animals, and that first conversation focused on the fact that Vail didn’t have an animal shelter. Vucich recalled that Vail had only an outdoor holding area for lost and stray animals at the time.
