EPA raises concerns over Eagle Creek sewer line, officials apply for grant

EAGLE CREEK, Pa. (WTAJ) – Eagle Creek, a subdivision in Union Township, is a small community facing a big issue: sewer replacement.

According to county officials, the EPA has been raising concerns about Eagle Creek’s water treatment infrastructure. The nearest sewer treatment facility is roughly a mile away, with the cost of building a line being estimated at $1.8 million.

“They don’t have the money to pay for a mile of water and sewer lines,” Commissioner Chair Mark Higgins said.

To help, the county is looking to apply for the highly competitive Community Development Block Grant from the DCED. They were rejected before with this project, so to sweeten the deal, they voted to allocate at least 75% of the potential grant money to go directly towards Eagle Creek.

“The more we give them, the better,” Leslie Hosterman, community development project coordinator, said.

The commissioners hope to earn the grant and say they will look for alternative solutions in the meantime. The DCED’s final decision on the grant recipient is expected April 2025.
