    2024-05-30

LAKEWOOD, Wis. — Just call Kaiden Bailey “Mr. Consistency”.

For the fourth time in as many years, the Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy senior qualified for the WIAA Division 3 State golf tournament after a stellar performance in Tuesday’s Sectional tournament at McCauslin Brook Golf Course.

With only the top-three individual golfers making the cut for State, Bailey finished tied with Northland Lutheran’s Konnor Mehlberg for second place after both linksmen turned in scores of 76.

Bailey finished one stroke behind Lena’s Braden McVane, who captured the individual Sectional crown with a low-round score of 75.

McVane’s outing capped a strong afternoon by the Wildcats, who saw Mason Spice (77) finish fourth overall to help Lena finish second in the team standings.

The Wildcats finished with a combined 313, four strokes behind Bonduel, who won the Sectional championship with a 313.

Both Lena and Bonduel will compete in the Division 3 State tournament, which takes place June 3-4 at Blackwolf Run Golf Course in Kohler.

Drake Dionne (81) finished 14th overall for the Wildcats. Mason Belongia (84) was 21st, while Evan VanderZanden was one stroke behind in 25th place with an 85.

Bailey’s teammate, Henry Piasecki shot 91 to tie Coleman’s Thomas Rhode for 33rd overall.

The Cougars finished ninth overall with a 381.

Chase Gruber was 42nd with a 93, while Valerie Broderick (98) placed 49th overall to give Coleman a trio of top-50 finishes.

Cameron Kimmell finished one stroke behind Broderick at 99, tying Gillett’s Aydin Franti for 53rd place.

Gavin Fochesato’s 69th-place score of 124 rounded out the Cougars’ afternoon.

Gillett finished 12th overall as a team with a combined score of 409.

Thomas Carmody paced the Tigers with a team-low 95, putting him in 44th place. Mats Harden (102) was 57th, one stroke better than Niagara’s Nate Olsen, who shot a 102 to take 58th place.
