Red Wave wash away Marquette with doubleheader sweep

    2024-06-25

MENOMINEE — A jam-packed week began on a high note for the Menominee Legion baseball team, as the Red Wave notched a two game sweep over the Marquette Reds at Spies Field on Monday.

Monday’s doubleheader was the first of what will be seven games in as many days for the Red Wave, with Menominee hosting Escanaba tonight (Wednesday) before beginning a four-game slate at the annual Firecracker Tournament in Marinette.

If Monday’s results are a harbinger of things to come, then the Red Wave can expect plenty of success in the coming days.

Menominee (6-6) handled Marquette in both contests, collecting a 10-3 victory in game one before wrapping up the sweep with a 12-3 demolition in the nightcap.

Game two began with the Red Wave ambushing Marquette behind RBIs from Blake Malke, Robert Finger, Torin Davis, Gable Buck and Conner Schroeder, which put Menominee on top 6-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

Finger plated Aiden Sevon with an RBI-groundout in the third before Buck and Chase Monnette tacked on ribbies of their own to balloon Menominee’s lead to seven in the bottom of the fourth.

The nightcap featured more of the same for the Red Wave, as Buck and Schroeder both scored to quickly put the Reds in a 2-0 hole.

Dylan Beal picked up his second RBI-groundout of the game as part of a three-run third inning for Menominee, while a two-run triple off the bat of Schroeder helped push the Red Wave ahead 9-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

Menominee’s pitching staff allowed just a combined nine hits and four walks through both games. Seven notched the W on the mound in game one, with one hit and five punchouts through just two-and-two-thirds innings pitched.

Buck was the winning hurler in game two after striking out seven and allowing three earned runs through four-and-one-third innings of work.

Davis went 2-for-2 at the plate with two walks, a run scored and two RBIs in game one. Schroeder went 1-2 with a three-run double, while Sevon was 2-2 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Beal collected three RBIs in a 1-3 outing at the dish in game two. Buck walked twice and had a stolen base in addition to scoring a pair of runs.
