MENOMINEE — Ava Chouinard, McKenzie Doyle and Anna Marsieck went out with a bang in the final home match of their high school careers as the Menominee girls tennis team swept Iron Mountain on Monday.

Menominee’s senior trio helped the Lady Maroons take down the Mountaineers 6-0. Menominee went a perfect 3-0 in singles action and 3-0 in doubles play, dropping just one set the entire afternoon.

Chouinard and Marsieck won their respective doubles matches, while Doyle bested Alysia Wood 6-2, 6-2 in their No. 2 singles duel.

Chouinard and Ella Barker dropped the opening set of their No. 1 doubles match against Betsy Vanegas and Veronica Stanchinia 3-6 but regrouped to take sets two and three 7-5 and 10-6 to secure the victory.

At the same time on the next court over, Marsieck and Bianca Kurtz were busy handling Bella Pickett and Lindsey Lewandowski 6-0, 6-1 in their No. 2 doubles match.

“Amazing win tonight. Tonight was Senior Night for Ava, Anna and McKenzie, and those three will be missed. They’ve shown amazing leadership and overall, they’re great young ladies. I would take 10 of each of them if I could,” Menominee coach Nikki Mathieu said. “Their hearts are amazing. They’re kind and always willing to help when needed. I will truly miss them.”

Monday’s match was also Menominee’s final tuneup for the Great Northern Conference championships, which takes place today (Wednesday) in Gladstone, and the rest of the Lady Maroons appeared sharp ahead of their penultimate match of the season.

Elena Murphy made quick work of Avea Brown brown in their No. 1 singles match, with Murphy quickly winning both sets 6-0, 6-0.

Menominee’s hot streak continued in Delaney Wagner’s No. 3 singles match against Jacalyn Rowe after Wagner clipped Rowe in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Lily Kamin and Zoey Frazer wrapped up Menominee’s sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Emelia Miles and Sarah Frodien in No. 3 doubles action.

“Girls played well. We needed this win going into GNCs. The girls know what they need to do in order to win, and how to correct simple mistakes in order to advance to the next round,” Mathieu said. “I’m proud of these girls. They’ve improved every match and now is the right time to peak because it’s anyone’s game at the GNCs.”
