Stephenson boys race to first place at Rapid River

RAPID RIVER — Faith Cappaert shined solo while the Stephenson High School boys cross country team finished first overall at the Rapid River Invite on Saturday.

Cappaert won the girls’ race with a time of 22:41.5, nearly 90 seconds ahead of Mid-Pen’s Aesara Lupinski, who settled for second place with a time of 24:07.8.

Gabriella Putnam gave the Lady Eagles two top-three finishes after crossing the finish line in 24:42.4, good for third overall. Meanwhile, Adrian Anderson ran the course in 27:04.9, which slotted the freshman into 10th place.

While Stephenson girls enjoyed plenty of success at Rapid River, they failed to qualify in the team standings due to only having three runners.

However, the Stephenson boys had no such difficulties, as a full complement of runners coupled with a trio of top-ten finishes netted the Eagles 52 points, good for first overall.

Canon Kuntze paced the Eagles with a second-place time of 18:55.2. Owen Kuehnau finished fourth in 19:35.3, while Trevor Verba ran a 20:05.7, good for ninth place.

Luke Olson (22:05.7) and Lyle Revall (25:56.5) finished 23rd and 33rd, respectively, to round out the day for the Stephenson boys.

Munising Danny Goss won the boys’ race in 17:20.06.
