MARINETTE — The Marinette High School football team will try to keep the good times rolling in Mishicot tonight.

The Marines and Indians both enter tonight’s contest feeling good after both squads collected their second victories of the season last week.

Mishicot improved to 2-5 overall with a 19-14 win over Sturgeon Bay. Junior QB Eli Skarda threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns while junior tailback Benjamin Backus ran the ball 21 times for 167 yards and a TD.

That two-headed monster paced a balanced attack that wracked up 342 yards of total offense against the Clippers.

Meanwhile, the Marines finally had an offensive breakthrough in a 41-6 win over Oconto.

Marinette had produced only five touchdowns in its previous five games, but the Marines hit pay-dirt on five of seven offensive drives against the Blue Devils.

The Marines’ offensive line, which has had its share of struggles during a 2-5 season to this point, was in complete control against Oconto.

The line opened big holes for Chase MacGregor who broke off a pair of runs of over 40 yards on his way to 157 yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile Ethan Doubek found the endzone three times on five touches and Cooper Smith provided the extra spark that the offense had been looking for by completing a pair of passes for 50 yards including a touchdown pass to Braxton Polzin and running for 54 yards.

For good measure, Smith added a pick-six for a solid all-around performance.

The Marines played a near mistake free game against Oconto one week after penalties hampered them during a double-overtime loss at Peshtigo.

Against Oconto, the Marines were flagged only twice and both came late in the game well after the issue had been decided.

Mishicot’s two wins have both come in conference play. The Indians are 2-3 in Packerland action while Marinette stands at 1-4.

After opening their Packerland slate with a 25-12 loss to Peshtigo, the Indians shutout Oconto 26-0. They played well in a 35-14 loss at Kewaunee before being thumped 56-6 against Conference leader Bonduel.

A Marinette win tonight could create a three-way tie for fifth in the Packerland standings.

Depending on the result of Peshtigo’s game at Kewaunee, the Marines, Bulldogs, and Indians could all end the week at 2-4 in conference play.

Tonight’s game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Mishicot.
