    Maroon boys finish third overall at GNC finals

    IRON MOUNTAIN — Marquette cruised its way to both the boys and girls’ Great Northern Conference cross country championships on Thursday.

    Marquette had seven runners finish inside the top-10 in each race, with the Sentinels occupying the first seven spots on the boys’ side while the Lady Sentinels had seven of the girls’ top-eight times.

    Rorik Holmquist captured the boys’ individual GNC title with a first-place time of 18:11.9, just tenths of a second faster than teammate Chase Thomsen, who finished second in 18:12.1.

    Meanwhile, Maija Maki-Warne nabbed Marquette the girls’ individual GNC crown after finishing over 10 seconds faster than Kingsford’s Maria Murvich.

    Maki-Warne crossed the finish line in 21:27.2, while Murvich settled for runner-up honors at 21:43.2.

    Marquette won the girls’ GNC championship with a team score of 19, well ahead of the Lady Flivvers, who finished second with 48 points, while Gladstone was a distant third with 71.

    On the boys’ side, the Sentinels finished with 15 points to take home the boys’ GNC team title. Gladstone (59) was second with Menominee taking third at 92.

    Escanaba (100) and Kingsford (119) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

    Brayden Bourion recorded the fastest time for the Menominee boys, placing eighth overall in 18:45,9.

    Blake Bourion and Henry Zuhels provided the Maroons with a pair of top-20 times, as Bourion broke the finish line in 20:15.1 to finish 16th overall, while Zuhels placed 19th with a time of 20:47.3.

    Andrew Miller finished his run in 22:19.8, putting him in 23rd place. Ethan Howarth just missed out on a top-25 finish, as Howarth (23:48.6) finished 0.6 seconds behind Kingsford’s Joshua Cameron and ended up in 26th place.

    Winley Brandt paced the Menominee girls with a ninth-place time of 23:38.0.

    Lilliana Revall seized 18th place with a time of 26:38.1 before Eden Allen (30:26.7) rounded out the Lady Maroons’ afternoon with 23rd-place finish.

    Menominee: The Maroons wrap up the season at the U.P. Finals, which take place October 19 at Pictured Rocks Golf Course in Munising.
