COLEMAN — As cliche as it may be to say that defense wins championships, the Coleman High School football team can attest to that fact after the Cougars shut down Crivitz 22-0 on Friday.

Coleman clinched the Northwoods Conference championship with Friday’s victory. The Cougars finished their conference slate undefeated at 7-0, the third time in four seasons they’ve done so.

The Cougars (9-0 overall) completely locked down Crivitz on Friday.

Crivitz (5-2 Northwoods, 7-2 overall) ran 31 plays, picked up two first downs and finished with minus-15 yards of total offense.

The Wolverines’ ground game, which averaged 234 yards per contest, was bottled up to the tune of negative-22 yards.

The only positive yardage the Wolverines could muster came through the air, where Evan Orlando 1-for-8 with a seven-yard completion to Stephen Allard.

Allard was also the lone Crivitz rusher to finish on the positive side of the ledger, albeit with just one carry for two yards.

Conversely, the Cougars rumbled their way to 263 yards of offense, 258 of which came on the ground.

Cole Berth, who finished with 21 yards on four carries, scored the first points of the night after punching in a 4-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Coleman found the end zone twice in the third quarter. First, Micah Kuchta found Darian Patz for a 5-yard passing touchdown before Kolton Peters tacked on a 16-yard rushing score.

Tristan Kostreva, who also had a successful 2-point conversion run in the second quarter, went 2-for-2 on his PAT kicks.

West Bieber was Coleman’s leading rusher with 16 carries for 85 yards. Peters finished with 67 yards on 14 touches, while Kuchta chipped in 55 yards on 18 carries.

Leo Vandermause notched an interception for the Crivitz defense.

    Algoma 22, Lena/STAA 20

ALGOMA, Wis. — Last season, the Algoma High School football team was the bridesmaid of the now-defunct Peninsula Conference after finishing two games behind the conference-champion Titans of Lena/STAA.

Friday, the Wolves got their payback in the form of a 22-20 triumph over Lena/STAA, capturing the inaugural Across the Bay Conference title in the process.

Lena/STAA (6-1 Across the Bay, 7-1 overall) led 14-6 at halftime but the Wolves (6-0 Across the Bay, 7-1 overall) engineered a second-half comeback bid to stun the Titans.

Max Peterson punched in a 2-yard touchdown run before adding another score, this one from 7-yards out, while the Titans went 1-for-2 on 2-point conversion runs to seize a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Algoma responded with 4:53 remaining in the second quarter after Lane Cochart hit Wyatt Fay for a 79-yard bomb, but the Wolves were unable to convert the ensuing 2-point conversion, which left Lena/STAA clinging to an eight-point lead at halftime.

Cochart managed to tie matters up at 14-14 early in the third after with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone before hammering home the 2-point conversion run, but Calvin Peters answered back with a 12-yard scoring jaunt of his own as the Titans grabbed a six-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

Cochart gave Algoma the lead for good with 7:42 left to play after finding Parker Liscka for a 10-yard touchdown toss to knot matters up at 20-20.

Cochart then hooked up with Liscka for a successful 2-point conversion to nudge the Wolves ahead by two, a deficit that Lena/STAA was unable to overcome in the waning minutes.

The Titans were whistled for seven penalties totalling 55 yards. Lena/STAA fumbled the ball three times, losing two of them, while Fay was able to collect an interception for the Algoma defense.

“We take our hats off to Algoma. It was a hard fought game and they didn’t quit when we jumped out with the lead. We did not have one of our better games. We had turnovers and penalties at very critical times. We haven’t had a game like this since early in the season and we told the players when we play good teams, this will be the difference and it was,” Lena/STAA coach Dale Lange said.

Lena/STAA out-rushed Algoma by a 302-112 margin, but the Wolves held the edge through the air, 153-16.

Peters had a team-high 24 carries for 149 yards and one touchdown. Tyler Shallow added 15 touches for 94 yards, while Peterson scored twice and ran for 59 yards on 13 carries.

Shallow (12 yards) and Mason Colt Miller (4 yards) both had catches for the Titans.

Cochart completed seven of his 10 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns while adding 11 carries for 20 yards and a score on the ground.

Joey Cabino paced the Wolves’ ground game with 53 yards on 17 carries. Liscka ran for 30 yards and had five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.
