ONONDAGA COUNTY – It’s a big track and field season for Cicero-North Syracuse as, once again, Bragman Stadium will serve as host for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships in early June.
Two months before that, though, the season would get underway for the Northstars with a high-profile meet against Fayetteville-Manlius where the girls Northstars prevailed 95-41 over the Hornets.
Anna Eels and Morgan Hayes immediately dueled in the 100-meter hurdles, with Eells taking the top spot in 15.14 seconds and Hayes (15.22) close behind. This was one of three events Eells claimed, also clearing 4 feet 10 inches to win the high jump and going 16’7” for first place in the long jump, edging Hayes’ 16’5”.
Sweeping the sprints, Jaydin Mackey went 12.53 seconds to beat Stephanie Todd (13.07) in the100-meter dash and, in 26.06, rolled in the 200-meter dash as she paired with Todd, Grace Murray and Aaliyah McDonald to win the 4×100 relay in 50.26.
Hayes got a title of her own in the triple jump, going 34’5 1/2” as Samantha Moreno went 32’7”. Annie Capone topped 8 feet and N Natta Luangaphay went 7’6” for a 1-2 finish in the pole vault as Murray, McDonald, Camryn Jacob and Elliana Ballagh ran the 4×400 relay in 4:26.24. Cameron Sisk was second in both the 800 and 1,500-meter runs.
The C-NS boys lost, 79-61, to F-M, with Joe Main leading the Northstars as he threw the discus 127’3” and the shot put 47’2” to win both of those events.
David Henry cleared 11 feet in the pole vault, with Edward Bethea going 37’7” for first place in the triple jump to edge the 37’2” from F-M’s Donovan Wonders. Matt Jordan’s 5’4” in the high jump matched the Hornets’ Matt Hiney and Joe Sullivan as Jefferson Cazimir had a top long jump of 19’8”.
On the track, Andrew Potter took the 110 hurdles in 16.75 seconds, but F-M got a sweep from Nolan McGinn in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs while also having Nikita Domashenko win the 100 and 200 sprints, with the Northstars’ Derick Hicks second in the 100 and Christian Kahrs second in the 200. Dan Henry took second in the 400 sprint in 53.46 seconds.
As this went on, Liverpool had its own big season-opening meet, hosting Baldwinsville, and would managed to split that event in the same manner that C-NS did with F-M, the girls winning 81-49 to make up for the boys Warriors falling 100-41 to the Bees.
Leading Liverpool’s girls, Kaitlyn Hotaling won twice in distance events, covering the 1,500 in 5:02.10 ahead of Yolanda Wei (5:06.90) and adding a 3,000 title in 10:56.89. Completing the distance-race sweep, Taylor Page was first in the 800 in 2:19.55 as Charlotte Warner (2:30.63) got second place.
Maddie Devendorf needed 12.96 seconds to hold off Mia Wright (13.12) for the top spot, while Mikayla Greene got the win in the 200 in 26.38 to Devendorf’s 26.81. Tamia Tearney, clearing 5 feet, won the pole vault over second-place Audrey Jenkins (4’10”) and then, in the long jump, Tearney prevailed again with 14’6 1/2″ to go with a second (29’11”) in the triple jump. Jenna Hayes was second in the shot put with 27’4 1/2″.
B’ville’s domination of the boys meet didn’t keep Liverpool’s NyQuez Madison from getting first-place finishes. Madison went 20’1 3/4″ in the long jump as no one else topped 19 feet and also unleashed a top triple jump of 40’3″, more than a foot ahead of his challengers.
It nearly got to a third title, Madison’s 11.58 seconds in the 100 sprint one-hundredth of a second behind Antonio Rivera’s 11.57. Madison also topped 5’4″ in the high jump.
Roman Murray’s 2:00.28 in the 800 was close behind the Bees’ Chris Zellar (2:00.24), who also won the 200 and 400 sprints as Murray added a second in the 3,200. Ade Adefashola got second in the 110 hurdles, with Maltrin Ramidani second in the 400 hurdles and Andrew Lodge second in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet.
