A crowd gathered Friday at Books & Brew, located at 2909 Nebo Rd. in East Bend, for a book signing with former WXII news anchor Cameron Kent.

Kent is the author of six books. He has also written several movies and a play.

In Kent’s latest book, “The Oak Island Book Club,” two book lovers, after a chance meeting at a bookstore, begin their own book club where they “read the same novels and discuss what life lessons they derive” and discover a romantic attraction.

Books & Brew owner Debbie Gough opened the shop, which features used books for adults and children as well as a coffee shop, three years ago. Gough said her personal extensive collection of books is what first gave her the idea to open a used book store alongside her niece who had experience running a coffee shop. Books & Brew has a large number of children’s books which they sell at discounted prices.

“Our goal was to get books into kids’ hands,” Gough said. Gough said families with young kids often come to the shop after school to get books and a treat.

The shop also has a selection of books that can be checked out on the honor system.

Gough, a former teacher, said one of her students ShaRee Parker, met Kent at another event and asked him to come to East Bend. Parker also wrote an article about Kent which is featured in the March-April issue of Yadkin Valley Magazine.

Books & Brew has more book signing events scheduled for the coming months. Visit Books & Brew, LLC on Facebook for information about upcoming events.
