East Brunswick's Sam Mattis Will Throw Discus in Summer Olympics in Early August

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ -- Earlier this month, East Brunswick native Sam Mattis finished second at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials to qualify for his second straight Olympic team.

The opening ceremony for the Olympic Games in Paris will be on Friday, July 26.

Track and field events will be held from Aug. 1 to Aug. 11, with the qualifying round for men’s discus set to take place in the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 5 and the final to be held two days later.

Mattis, who graduated from East Brunswick High School in 2012, was a 2021 Olympian, and he is a two-time U.S. champ in the discus.

Mattis attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he holds the program record in the discus throw.

Mattis, 30, entered the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials ranked 13th in the world and as the No. 1 American this year. He unloaded a throw of 66.07 meters in the finals to place second. Typically, the top three athletes to place secure their spots on the team. However, Mattis did not meet the Olympic standard of 67.20 meters. Instead, Mattis qualified based on his World Athletics ranking.
