No. 3 Mentor shows it can finish vs. No. 9 St. Ignatius
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — One bad play didn’t faze Mentor senior cornerback Tyler Stapleton or his teammates. Two plays into the Cardinals’ 20-14 win Friday night against St. Ignatius at John Carroll University’s Don Shula Stadium, Stapleton found himself beat on a play-action post pass to Cody Haddad. While Haddad is among Northeast Ohio’s biggest playmakers, an Ohio State commit at safety who scored the Wildcats’ only touchdown in their playoff win last year at Mentor, Stapleton shook off the touchdown and buckled up.

Tiffin Columbian at Chardon football: Preview capsule for Aug. 30 game
Last week: Chardon def. Timber Creek, Fla., 29-7, Tiffin Columbian def. Fremont Ross, 27-11 For the record: This was a donnybrook last year, with the Tornadoes hanging a 50-49 win on the Hilltoppers in a game that featured a regional finalist (Columbian) and state semifinalist (Chardon), teams that both had their seasons end at the hand of eventual Division III state champion Toledo Central Catholic. … Chardon’s ground game controlled the tempo last week in Orlando, Fla. Drayton Allgood and Vinny Colombi both ran for more than 100 yards, with Colombi scoring all four of his team’s touchdowns. The defense was equally as stingy, giving up only one score. It’ll be interesting to see if Tiffin Columbian punts or kicks to Chardon’s Caleb Hewitt, a game-changer in the return game last week. .. Columbian trailed last week, 11-6, at the half, but scored three second-half touchdowns to defeat the Little Giants. The Tornadoes’ backfield tandem of Brady Bonnell and Masen Seitz combined for 194 yards on the ground, while QB Zach Shawberry hit Johnny Bremyer for a third-quarter score. … It’s safe to say both teams will look to slow down the opposition’s run game first and foremost.
Geneva vs. Harvey football: Eagles post 427 yards in 49-7 victory over Red Raiders
Geneva elected the express ground shipping option in its cross CVC conference game with Harvey on Aug. 30. The Eagles had 357 first-half yards, 345 on the ground and five rushing touchdowns. They finished with 427 total yards in a 49-7 victory. Geneva improves to 2-0, while Harvey falls to...

Berkshire vs. Hawken football: Powerful Hawks take 34-7 victory
There are a lot of ways a veteran, multi-faceted Hawken team can beat you. The Hawks’ offense can attack through the air or the ground. They can hit big plays or grind out yards. They can use all three phases of the game to make for a long night for their opponents.
Madison at South football: Preview capsule for Aug. 30 game
Last week: Shaker Heights def. South, 28-14, Perry def. Madison, 42-10 For the record: Both teams tasted defeat in Week 1, but both should come with an asterisk as Shaker has one of the top players in the nation in Trey McNutt (an Oregon commit) and Perry is the reigning Division V state champion and loaded for bear. … First-year QB Will Randall threw a touchdown pass to lead the Madison offense in the opener. RB James Poe is the top running threat, while the receivers are highlighted by Mac Steele and the versatile Alexander Davis, who could line up anywhere. Madison’s defense will look to tighten things up this week. … South is young this year, but talented with a big upside. Sophomore QB Luke Jensen has a lot of experience at the receiver position with seniors Mason Matriano, Brady Namestnik and Drew Vilk. Spreading out the opposing defense with such receivers can open up the running lanes for Jayden Hardy in the ground game. … Both teams would like to get a win this week to avoid an 0-2 start and build momentum going forward.

University vs. Riverside boys soccer: New-look Preppers continue red-hot start
