Flood Disaster 2.0: Community Steps Up
If anything positive came out of the destructive 2023 flood last July, it was that communities such as Barre, Montpelier, and Waterbury learned how to jump into action in the event of a disaster. And a disaster happened again, on July 10 and 11, the exact dates of last year’s flood. One year ago to the day of last year’s catastrophic flooding, our city awoke to a flood watch due to the remnants of Hurricane Beryl making its way up the east coast. While Montpelier was largely spared from most of the damage, our neighboring towns in Barre, Waterbury, Middlesex, and Plainfield weren’t as lucky. As this past year has made crystal clear, flooding continues to be one of the biggest challenges we’ve ever had to face as a community.
