Michigan State hockey will be losing a key star player from next year’s roster.

Defenseman Artyom Levshunov will reportedly officially turn pro and not return to Michigan State for his sophomore season next year. Ben Pope of the Chicago Suntimes reported the notable hockey news on Saturday evening.

Levshunov was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks with the No. 2 overall pick in last week’s NHL Draft. He was expected to leave Michigan State after being selected so high in the draft but there was still a slight chance he’d come back for one more year with the Spartans.

Pope is reporting that Levshunov is expected to start the season with the Blackhawks’ AHL affliate team — the Rockford IceHogs.
