How Moneyball Pro-Am came to be, plus the Olympics are almost here

As a Major League baseball fan (Go, Cubs!) and overall sports fan, I hate the All-Star Break (July 15-18). Four days of no baseball in the heart of summer? It seems wrong, especially when there are limited options for other sports to consume.

Except in Greater Lansing, where basketball fans can catch the Moneyball Pro-Am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It’s a chance to see Michigan State players up close and in a relaxed environment, in addition to other college players and pros. Moneyball, the brainchild of Moneyball Sportswear founder Desmond Ferguson, has been around for two decades now. Columnist Graham Couch wrote this week about the history and evolution of the pro-am . He also wrote columns about MSU players Coen Carr and Gehrig Normand .

And lest Couch be accused of slacking off this summer, he also wrote a column about MSU hockey and is working on one about MSU decathlete Heath Baldwin, who’ll be representing the United States in the Paris Olympics.

Speaking of, the Olympics start on Friday, July 26 with the Opening Ceremony. If you’re an Olympics junkie like me, stay up-to-date with coverage from the USA TODAY Network. Our team of journalists in Paris and stateside will provide comprehensive, timely and exclusive content throughout the 16-day bonanza.

Find coverage at https://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/ and in the Sports Xtra section of the daily eNewspaper.

Team LSJ will pay particular attention to Baldwin’s performance in Paris, in addition to other Michigan athletes. You’ll find that content in the usual places: www.lsj.com , the eNewspaper and our print editions.

    Go, Team LSJ!
