New law makes it easier for Michigan prisons to release people in poor health
DETROIT (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a law Tuesday that would make it easier for people to be released from Michigan prisons if they’re in debilitating health and considered to be a minimal risk to the public. The new law replaces a 2019 law that was seen as vague and hard to apply. Only one person had been released, according to FAMM, an advocacy group that works for changes in criminal justice systems across the country. The Michigan parole board will have authority to release someone to a medical facility, hospice or a home, especially if they have a life expectancy of less than 18 months. “Their needs are too much for the Corrections Department and they’re not a risk to public safety,” said Maria Goellner, director of state policy at FAMM.

The first year of college is getting closer and closer for Michigan State University's incoming freshman. With this milestone, it's important to keep the "dos" and "don'ts" in mind. Psychology sophomore Elizabeth Antrassian said one of her most important "dos" was to set boundaries. "Set good boundaries with roommates," she said. "I had a really bad roommate, and she just did not respect…any of the (rules) we put in place." When boundaries are violated, Antrassian emphasized how important it is to stand up for yourself. "Speak up and don't let someone walk all over you," Antrassian said. "If you're...

MSU CB Charles Brantley laughs at where MSU landed in preseason Big Ten poll
Where the Spartans landed in the Big Ten preseason media poll is comical to Michigan State cornerback Charles Brantley. The Spartans were picked to finish 16th out of 18 teams in the Big Ten football preseason poll released by Cleveland.com on Monday. That low of a placement was surprising to me, and it apparently was funny to Brantley, who took to X to post about it. Check out Brantley’s post on X below: 16th 🤣🤣🤣🤣 make sure y’all stand on that 💯🤫 — cinco5™️ (@cbrantley22) July 23, 2024 Contact/Follow us @The SpartansWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan state news, notes and opinion.
