EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has fined Associated Building Wreckers for violations during asbestos abatement activities at a commercial property in East Longmeadow.

Associated Building Wreckers, an asbestos contractor from Springfield, has been fined $35,670 after MassDEP discovered the violations during an inspection at the property located at 14-16 Maple Street , located at the East Longmeadow Rotary. Violations include failing to use the appropriate methods of containing and minimizing the release of asbestos when working on a roof during demolition activities, which led to visible particulate emissions into the environment.

“Compliance with MassDEP’s asbestos regulations prevents the releases of asbestos during demolition and construction projects,” said Michael Gorski, Director of MassDEP’s Western Regional Office in Springfield. “It is imperative that contractors know and follow the regulations and immediately identify and address issues that may lead to a release of asbestos fibers.”

Associated Building Wreckers will pay $25,000 in penalties and must comply with the terms of the consent order.

Property owners or contractors who have questions about the handling, removal, packaging, storing, and disposal of asbestos-containing materials can contact the MassDEP Regional office for assistance.
