Christ Church Neighborhood House Uncovers Lost Pieces of Philadelphia History Beginning With “Groundings: An Exhibit”
This summer, Christ Church Neighborhood House pulls back the curtain on a lesser known history in the City of Brotherly Love. Christ Church has been conducting research to discover the lives and everyday acts of resilience and survival by Black people, both free and enslaved in Colonial Philadelphia. Many were buried on the grounds of Christ Church without headstones and this research is designed to shed light on who these people were. This research will culminate in On Buried Ground, an upcoming performance running during the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Part of the experience will also include an interactive art exhibit. Groundings: An Exhibition opens July 26 at 7 p.m, explores history, memory, and hope in 18th and 19th Century Philadelphia. The exhibit is at Christ Church Neighborhood House, 40 N. Ex-officer guilty of perjury, obstruction for role in wrongful murder conviction case
A jury convicted a former Philadelphia homicide detective for assaulting a suspect to obtain a confession and then lying about it in court.James Pitts was found guilty of obstruction and perjury on Tuesday.Pitts was accused of assaulting Obina Onyiah in 2010, which resulted in Onyiah confessing to a robbery and murder of William Glatz at a jewelry store, which he did not commit.Onyiah's conviction was vacated in 2021 after evidence showed he could not have committed the crime.Pitts is scheduled to be sentenced on October 4.According to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, this is the first time in the city's history that a Philadelphia detective has been found guilty of coercing a confession that led to the wrongful conviction of an innocent person."My administration will continue to seek evenhanded justice in all cases prosecuted by this office, regardless of the defendant, because no one is above the law," said DA Larry Krasner.
Ardi Torollari Killed In Philadelphia Shooting: Police
Ardi Torollari of Northfield, New Jersey was shot in the chest while sitting in his Volkswagen on the 200 block of South 54th Street, investigators said in a release. Torollari was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries around 6:10 p.m., authorities said. No weapon was recovered from the scene and no arrests were made as of Tuesday, July 16.
