East Orange, NJ – High school is a time of intense growth and self-discovery, often accompanied by emotional and academic challenges. For Breanna Thomson, the 2024 Valedictorian of East Orange S.T.E.M. Academy, these years were not just about personal achievements but also about making a significant impact on her community’s mental health.
From an early age, Breanna was fascinated by the idea of becoming a valedictorian. Her ambition took a definitive shape during her sophomore year when her guidance counselor, Ms. Woods, informed her that she was leading her class. This revelation motivated Breanna to excel further, pushing her to enroll in multiple Advanced Placement courses despite warnings about the rigors of junior year. However, the pursuit of academic excellence and involvement in extracurricular activities began to take a toll on her mental health.
Recognizing the strain, Breanna took a courageous step towards self-care by seeking therapy. This decision not only improved her well-being but also heightened her awareness of the mental health struggles faced by her peers. Determined to make a difference, she collaborated with her guidance counselors to create a Mental Health Awareness Month presentation.
The result was an impactful assembly titled “Unspoken Word,” which featured artistic performances that allowed students to express their inner emotions creatively. The event resonated deeply with the school community, moving teachers to tears and inspiring Breanna to host it again in her senior year. This year’s presentation, “Inside Out: Unmasking the Inner Struggle,” included a panel discussion with student representatives from each grade and incorporated interactive elements that fostered a stronger sense of community within the academy.
Breanna’s dedication to mental health advocacy has left an indelible mark on S.T.E.M. Academy. Even after graduating in May, her assemblies’ popularity has prompted many students to request her continued involvement as an alumna. Embracing this opportunity, Breanna is already planning future events and looking forward to nurturing new student leaders to carry on her legacy.
As she prepares to attend Smith College in Massachusetts, where she will study Neuroscience and Philosophy, Breanna is excited about the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Her aspirations include opening a research facility and establishing a private school with a unique curriculum, all while continuing her work in mental health.
Breanna Thomson’s journey from a determined student to a mental health advocate serves as an inspiration to her peers and the entire East Orange S.T.E.M. Academy community. Her legacy of compassion and leadership will undoubtedly endure, reflecting her belief in the power of speaking up and making a difference.
